  1. lol oh no worries full caution will be used since this stuff specifically states it is used for scouring concrete pads for finishing
  2. Not sure if Im posting this in the right subforum but here goes. So I was cleaning out My folks garage and came across three one gallon jugs muriatic acid used in concrete finishing, the only think I can think of doing besides taking this to hazmat for disposal if they would even take it. would this work good for etching and bringing out the patters in a "Damascus" billet/blade etc?? Thanks for the help Guys!
  3. Are you talking about actual mammoth teeth or is this a style of handle material or wood?
  4. I agree with you on this lets see the extent of the damage before cutting that shotgun up, it looks like its got a beautiful barrel pattern, it may be a minor fix a gunsmith can take care of.
  5. Its functional over pretty i think lol so no worries there
  6. Finished my forge a few days ago and did a test burn to see how everything worked and to see if anything caught fire that shouldnt have and im pleased to say that everything works good so i heated up some steel and made a coal rake since i didnt have one :D
  7. I have a smaller wet/dry vac but im not sure if it has a blower port ill check that tomorrow now its time to hunt around the house for some old steel to work with.
  8. did a burn this afternoon when I got home and while my airsource was rediculously overpowered(6.0 hp shop vac)i got the forge nice and hot and had no issues with the wood frame getting too hot, so i grabbed a small chunk of square stock i had in the shop and stuck it in the coals, since i didnt have myself a coal rake i made one in about 15 minutes and it works pretty well. im not sure if it will get up to forge welding temperatures at the current time but i think with the right airsource and fuel it will forgeweld just fine.
  9. being of limited experience myself i think that most people dont build brick forges like the one you have pictured because it is not moveable once it is built unless you feel like tearing it down it is a permanent structure in a persons shop and when a person aquires more equipment they have to work around the room left by the brick forge not being able to move the forge around to better arrange their shop. just my thoughts though.
  10. Thanks mt i wil put it through a burn and see how it does first.
  11. ive run into that plenty in the few years ive been welding, i find that hitting it with the slag hammer till it fractures then making a few passes on it with a wire wheel seem to work just fine for cleaning it out
  12. well after finally getting my hind end in gear the last few days since it hasnt been cold just raining i finally got the forge 99% complete shes all put together. instead of going to the hardware store and getting some steel i decided the other day to wander through our old garage and found two commercial sized cookie style sheets and since they were rusty i pretty much think that they are not galvanized so i cut the corners then flattened the sides. then i attached the legs after staining and coating them in a single coat of polyeurethane. After attaching the pans to the top of my framework i marked and cut one pan so that it has about a 2" overlap i then riveted the pans together then i traced and cut the hole for my brake drum to nestle in, i was worried that the drum might fall through the pans as they are fairly thin so underneath u attached a crosspiece of angle iron, i will probably put a second one on the other side of the drum but im out of angle iron at the moment. everything nestles nicely together and looks pretty good to me. im still thinking about covering the bottom of the framework up leaving a hole for the pipe and filling it with sand to further insulate the wood from the head what is everyones opinion on that? im still waffling on whether i should clay the drum or not. Thank you everyone for the input along the way it was greatly appreciated.
  13. Well in between rain squalls here i cut up then split some firewood for the kitchen then since i am still building my forge i cut stained and polyeurethaned the legs, then something told me to go into the old garage and poke around some, wouldnt you know it i found two old industrial cookie sheets non galvanized obviously so i hit those with the wire wheel and painted them with a healthy coat of rust stop. These two sheets will be riveted together and become the tabletop for my forge, i think ill have everything all put together by tomorrow afternoon.
  14. I think for alot of us here besides the cost of building vs buying unless you get a smokin score at the scrap yard or in the classifieds or on craigslist then i say go for it but from what I have found on there people want sometimes double to triple what the forge or other item they are selling is worth, the second part of it i think is the satisfaction of being able to say yeah i built this forge for under a couple hundred dollars and though it may not look pretty it is built by my hand.
  15. Guess ill have to check out ace and see what they have
  16. What was the brand of refractory cement you used?
  17. well i got the wood stained and that spent the week drying because it is always oh so dry and warm here in washington, first coat of polyeurethane went on the first two sides now to let it dry for a few days. sorry for the unfocused pictures ill try to get some better ones tomorrow.
  18. i will have to keep that in mind if i build another force since i have what appears to be a drum from a 1ton truck as well so i may use that and like you said put a dome on it since my current one has a flat bottom.
  19. Does it chew through fuel? The reason im thinking of using the refractory is to better channel the air instead of having this big open area full of charcol/ coal etc that may or may not get used.
  20. If it burns out i have alot of grinding to do lol but as far as the cone of refractory thats what i plan on doing i just need to find the castable refractory
