  1. very true i could but i guess im a little more traditional as far as working with wood :D
  2. i will, im going to stain the other side of the boards and i think im going to need to pick up more polyeurethane because i only have a small can, then i have to make the legs and will stain them as well.
  3. These respirators are great, i bought mine after being tired of dealing with the black snot everytime i blew my nose, if i remember right these are designed to fit underneath 98% of welding helmets manufactured today.
  4. When i was taking welding courses in college i had a tool box to store my grinder hammers welding jacket etc. For the small stuff like tig gear and such i kept all of that in little plastic fishing lure containers from walmart, i had one for tig gear, flux core(dualshield), and mig welding and had each box labled as such, i typically kept two of each of the common sized tig cups you would most likely use if i recall cups 4-8.
  5. What are your thoughts on claying the drum with refractory cement
  6. thats why its going to be filled with sand for insulation
  7. so after being on this site for awhile and looking through posts and posting a decent amount myself and talking about building a low budget brake drum coal/charcol forge here is what i have so far, i got the drum from the scrap bin at the auto parts store before they canned me, the pipe i found spelunking in my dads old and very very tired garage, its 2.5 inch diameter pipe which is perfect because that was the size of the hub hole on the drum, the plate welded to the drum is 1/4 steel, i stick welded the wheel stud holes to the backing plate and then stick welded the pipe to the plate, which was probably the hardest part so far( i miss the tig welder i used when i was taking classes) reading through the threads i ran across several that were discussing wooden forges so that is what i decided to make since i have plenty of lumber laying around, i cut four pieces of 2x5.5" and sanded them down then stained what i intend to be the outside and beings as i am in washington and it isnt exactly optimal staining conditions the wood is sitting in the garage to cure then i will assemble it. now comes to my questions, would it be a good idea to stain the entire thing then coat it in polyurethane to protect it against the weather or would that be a rather large fire hazard? im going to fill the main box of the forge with sand so i will get good spacing from the wood that way, as far as a blower i havent decided yet what i will use. Ideas and criticisim are both welcomed gratefully, oh and i almost forgot, would it be a good idea to line the forge with refractory cement to shrink the area the charcol is going to sit in? i was thinking of an upside down funnel style. thank you everyone for your time.
  8. Beautiful knife that handle is exquisite
  9. soo cook it in bacon grease? :D lol. thanks for the info I always wondered about it
  10. I have been looking through all the wonderful blades that you guys make and I keep asking myself, how does one prevent rust from forming on a forged blade after it is a finished product?
  11. with thick pieces of steel you have to preheat the cut line with something that big you would have to preheat the heck out of it, water jet might be a better option but as others have said, torch angle, speed and preheat.
  12. Looked in the bin again at work today and i think theres a smalller drum in there ill check it out tomorrow so i know for sure, i have a feeling the drum i currently have is bigger than i need
  13. Well im going to do my best to keep in under $100 i already have an anvil and multiple hammers and living out in the boondocks like i do wood isnt a problem lol, the drum was scrap from a customer who didnt want the drums
  14. Ill look through the bin at work and see if there are any smaller drums i had a feeling this big one would burn alot of fuel, anyone bought coal off of ebay?
  15. well i think its from a 1ton not exactly sure but the dang thing is big probably about 6 inches deep, i will keep the side blast forge idea on the table though
  16. newbie here and i wonder if the brake drum off of something like a 1ton pickup would be too deep or just right for making a brake drum forge, thoughts?
  17. Geoff im down south of olympia a little ways, thanks for the Info Jeremy ive dropped by there but will definately look more into it, as far as making a forge i am leaning towards a brake drum forge to start out since i have access to a good supply of them through my job and because i think i can build one for under $100 and i like that kind of challenge
  18. Hello everyone found this site a little while ago and have been lurking, burnt a bit of metal here and there especially in the welding program at college but i started burning metal long ago and just getting back into it and working on my first forge build so ill ask this which is better for using to forge, coal, charcoal or gas? Im looking at building a brake drum forge but am open to ideas. I look forewards to plenty of interaction with everyone on the board.
