i also make maple syrup and my arch is made out of sheet metal sides and 1/4 inch angle iron, but i have 1 inch arch board insulation and full 2x4x9 inch fire brick and usually after a 8 hour boil the sides are just getting to hot to touch

I havent been there in about 5/6 years. there was a blacksmith shop in BERLIN. it was on the north side of the main street and about 1 building off the corner.

sounds like the madison heights area. im about 1 hour north of you. you might check out GREEN FIELD VILLAGE IN DEARBORN. I think they have a blacksmith shop there.

i had the same problem so i bought some charcoal and poof i had a fire, and then went and bought some good coal from a different supplier . the end results was amazing, now a good hot fire that heats the metal
