  1. Thanks for all the responses. It'll give me some more things to google for. Good point about it being cast too. I was thinking I would use it mostly for opening up loops that I make to small or getting a radius without having to "free hand" over the side of the anvil (read as rr track ) Thanks, Rob.
  2. Does anyone know what this really is... It'll be an anvil horn for me but I have no idea what it was really for/called. I would like to find one for a friend. I found this at a yard sale for $5. Thanks in advance, Rob.
  3. Smokeman, Homedepot had a pretty good selection of black iron pipe if you wanted to swap it out. They'll cut and thread pipe too in the same section of the store if you need them to. Now that I think of it though, I didn't see any black iron flanges, just galv. Rob.
  4. Hey Smokeman pretty cool. nice to know your in the area too. I'm working on a similar setup but from a cast drain. 2" black iron t and pipe. I think it was frosty that had a good idea about an ash dump so I went to TSC and picked up a rain cap for an exhaust stack. I bought the 2 1/4" but I think the 2 1/2" would have been better. nice job. Rob.
  5. I was wondering about that actually. I have a cheap flux core mig that I do some odd things with. I wasn't sure what the rail was made of though so i figured I could just stick it together with that and see. I'll have to dig up some info on it. I'm better with OA and I know that throws some heat into the base metal so maybe that would be a good route. The other thing I was thinking was just making "hardies" that have a slot to the bottom of them that sits on the webbing. I guess that depends on the use though. I really need to get some heat together and start using it because I think that'll show me what things work and which don't. I almost had one of the kids hold the rosebud for me while I played around. The nephew was cute looking with a welding jacket, leather apron, goggles, gloves, boots... That's not a good permanent setup though! Rob PS. Frosty, Pennsic, like the SCA thing?
  6. TP, thanks I was trying to think of how to do the tongs and hammers since the back side is unused space. Good point on the Pressure Treated too. I wasn't thinking about that when I was looking for scrap around my yard. I'm not planning on leaving it outside anyway. If I moved the frame down three to four inches and built up under the vise, would that be enough you think? Then I could take advantage of Goatmans idea with the bottom fuller too. Thanks, Rob.
  7. Thanks, guys. Frosty I like the idea of making a hot cut. I'll have to look into that. I'll let you guys know how it works out. I'm thinking it's probably only a useful design for someone using rail though. I did have another idea about something else though. I have a sewing machine pedal from an old machine. I was thinking about making a "curtain spot quencher". I was thinking if I rig the pedal up to a small fish tank pump or something I could create a wide waterfall like curtain of water. Then if I wanted to cool an area I could bring the stock in from the side and just cool a thin area or move it forward or back to get more. The reason I thought of this was when I took the class I was not very good at controlling the water with the watering can. I was thinking this might help with making precise twists and for upsetting etc. Any thoughts? Rob. PS kind of like this but straight up and down.
  8. I went out early this morning and started laying out a stand for my rail and my leg vise. I noticed that the rail was exactly 5 1/2" tall so I had some scrap 4x6 and 4x4 sitting around. A quick trip to HD and stuck this together. Seems like it's pretty solid and is easy to move with a hand truck. I just have to fasten down the rail. I also found the drain that was mentioned in another thread to use as a firepot so for $17 I had to grab it and give it a shot. I'd love to hear some folks thoughts on the stand. I'm either going to cover over the tops of the tubes with something soft or put something in them I can use for shaping that won't kill me if I miss a swing. Thanks, Rob.

    Loaded Stand

Here's the stand with the anvil and vise.

    Bare Stand

This is just the frame for my RRAnvil and Leg Vise
  11. Does this count? I don't even think it counts as an "ASO" but it's heavy BTW it is legit. It was the rails that the reactor vessels were brought in on during construction etc. Now I just need heat. Off to the junkyard. Rob

    railanvil

Rail anvil made from the end of a rail 3" under wrist height to be supported by a 4"x6" on it's side.
  13. Hey that's pretty cool. I did a google search for "iron cesspool bell trap" and got a ton of hits. They range in size from 3 inchers to 12 inchers. I may have to give this a shot since they have them at the local ace. Thanks, Rob.
  14. I've been wondering if any design ideas could be pulled from these. http://www.structint.com/tekbrefs/sib96138/fig3.gif It's a picture of a reactor jet pump. I used to do the instrumentation for them. The drive flow from the recirc pump would come up the middle and split in half in the rams head. From there the drive flow would entrain 2 times the volume of water from around the nozzles. Then they would build pressure in the diffuser to be able to force the water through the core. Normal core flow at 100% power was 102.5 million lbs/hr with only 30 million lbs/hr from the pumps themselves.
  15. I think there is a major fascination with swords and knives. My girlfriends sons room is loaded with cheap junk swords and knives. He actually has a display case that's a large wooden cube with plexi panels full of stuff that says made in Pakistan. But he loves it. So I think when someone finds out that you have ability to make them they get excited but they have no idea about all the other incredible things that can be made. BTW nothing against Pakistan but some of the stuff he has is made with plastic guards etc. Rob.
  16. Keykeeper, I'd love to see those pics if you get them. Sounds cool. I remember the one biker build off where Billy Lane made the devil tail brake pedal. Up till then I always though of bike building as welding, grinding, and cutting.
  17. HD, Probably better the other way round since all I own so far is a leg vise and 2 hammers I do have a line on a piece of rr track to use on end for an anvil. So after that I just need some heat. Probably do something like an ezburner setup. So hopefully soon I'll be up and running. As for my bike... Bought it used from a guy in NJ and just dropped the tranny oil tonight. Ouch! Milky white and the plug was covered in shavings. So i flushed it with a quart and then filled it to the line. I'm going to run it for a few days and then drop it again and see what it looks like. It would definitely be cool to get together at some point though. Rob.
  18. hdwarner, those are some pretty cool ideas. I have taps etc but no lathe. I was thinking if I had say square stock, I could round up the end, drive it through a hole in some plate to get a more consistent round rod end, then clean up any shoulder caused by that. Then I could run a die down the end to get my threads. Sound feasible? I guess the only real question would be the design in the middle taking the hammering. Thanks, Rob.
  19. hdwarner, I was thinking of threading the ends for the ball joints or just welding them on. I figured it would just be a pretty cool beginner project. Any thoughts? As for riding, I wave to everyone on two wheels, period. Rubber side down on the road and thin side up in the forge... Right :-) Thanks Rob.
  20. I hope MD never goes there. I was thinking about making a shift linkage for my softail once I get set up. Should be a pretty easy thing to make. Anyone have any examples?
  21. Frosty, It looks like Sketchup has a software requirement of IE6 or better. I'll try to play with it at work tomorrow and see if I can cause the same problem. Rob.
