  1. I actually made mine from 6x6 pressure treated lumber. I cut the pieces to length and then bolted them together with 7/8 ready rod. After that I banded them at the bottom middle and top with 1/8" x1 1/2" steel flat bar. Made a pretty good stand for my 200 pounder. Had too much trouble finding a stump I liked so I just decided to make one. No worries making it level if you use a large enough chop saw or a radial arm saw.
  2. I found this item while I was surfin for auctions in my area. First off I am not associated in any way with the seller or the auctioneer. I just thought that any interested smiths should have a shot at this one if they were interested. The auction is in New Carlisle which I think is in west central to central Ohio. Attached is a link to the auction info and they have a picture gallery. GILLESPIE PUBLIC AUCTION - CLASSIC CARS - TOOLS - NEW CARLISLE, OH It looks a bit rough but who knows. Keep hammerin on.....
  3. Had to go to a sporting event for one of the kiddies yesterday. Today though I fired up the forge and made a pair of tongs to hold flat stock for blades. Had to at least make some noise or the neighbors might start talking. Keep hammerin on.....
  4. The same thing is happening all over too many dad blame lawyers and insurance companies involved. A feller can't even sneeze without a fear of a lawsuit. I have had places that I dealt with for years all of a sudden cut me off because of liability. The best answer is to find a private yard and deal with them. I have two that I deal with now. No problems...The donuts are not a bad idea anyway.
  5. That is so cool an original swiss army ax. I love it. Great work!! Looking forward to seeing more of your inventions. Keep hammerin on...
  6. The neighbor was getting rid of an old chicken house that was converted to storage by the previous owner. In truth he said "I'm gonna burn it to the ground." I asked if i could go through it before he lit it up and found two pairs of nippers champion no less and an old turning hammer. Couple of old four way lug wrenches as well. Never know what you will find.
  7. That must have been one heck of a weekend. Great looking blades. The one knife in the third pic looks like it was from a RR spike. What were the rest of them made from?
  8. Knarfle, Please take the advice of Dr. J (JPH) He has literally written the book on the subject. Do not take the criticism as harsh. We are all pretty friendly around here. This is a very informative site but folks expect a bit of research to be done on ones own. I would also reccomend that you visit Sword Forum INT'l and first and foremost read Dr.J's books. Just a bit of friendly advice.
  9. I have been toying with the idea of building a JY hammer. I haven't gotten around to it. Will be looking forward to your updates on the project. What did those plates come off of? Keep hammerin on :)
  10. I started with a wood fire in the backyard and a piece of a cast Iron forklift frame for an anvil. First project was a poker for the fire and then it was off to the races.
  11. Well to be honest my first steel anvil stand was a huge let down. Part of that could have been poor design on my part but I went back to wood. I built one out of 4"x6" instead of 2" material though. First one I ever had was a huge block of oak that my grandpa let me have out of the saw mill.
  12. Greetings and Salutations Fellow Craftsmen and Women: I used to be on here quite a bit but it has been a long while ago. I hail from the cornfields of south-eastern IN. My primary interest is in bladesmithing and tool making. Recently switched from coal to gas fired forge (gee what a leap.) Could not get good coal in my area any longer. I thought that Gas would be a better alternative since it was readily available. Been a little tricky setting up. Professionally I am teaching computer science at a two year college to pay the bills. I would rather be smithing for a living but cannot do so just yet. Look forward to meeting everyone and hopefully getting reaquainted with others. Keep on hammerin on....
