    Drift vs wrap, different bit stocks, any difference in technique for a small hawk compared to a heavy splitter. Explain why a ground and polished blade is better than the textured paint on Lowes roofing hammer that is sold as a hatchet. If its there in the older stuff that's not available on the mobile app I'm sorry for wasting time. I can't afford a computer and smart phones aren't great for searches.

    Anyone willing to take the group through all the steps to how they make an ax with a high carbon insert for the bit? What your favorite bit is? Welding a 1080, 1095 or a 5160 bit. Mild steel heads vs. One steel heads?

    So you can't use the handle end when you burn the tip? Just cut off the bad end.

    If an Apple has a bruise don't eat the bruise. Cut the Apple in 1/2 and eat the good part. Save and reuse whatever you can. Steel especially high carbon steels are expensive. I never said I'd use the burn end or the.cracked part.

    Time vs. Cost. Is it worth my time to rough out a green handle, then rasp and sand the cured piece? No that's why I asked for handles to buy.

    A failed 5160 knife blank cracked, burnt, etc. Usually has a nice piece left for making a bit for a hatchet or ax. I have lots of those.

    Even if I don't get charged for my time there. It would be extremely inappropriate to not clean the shop, pick up coal from the supplier, keep the tools up, and go with him to help him sell His wares. I want to be the guy who is welcome, appreciated, and missed when I'm done. So a suggestion to the guys wanting to learn from someone. Their time is valuable get them to value yours as well.

    Plus there are blacksmithing things to make too. Gate stuff, fire place stuff, knick knacks, and then there are the projects you find on here.

    I have someone to show me his style or forging knives. His teacher lives even closer. He's really happy to have someone who wants to learn. Told me I've got the bug bad. He's right of course and some of you know that and all of you know about the hot metal bug.

    Got too agree with Paulky nice looking great lines but not enough meat in the eye for hard continuous use.

    Stress did not get relieved by normalizing? Is that a bigger problem the bigger the piece?

    Very insightful. Yes I did use a power hammer and most probably let the metal get too cool. I'll definetly watch the heat. Yellow/orange sound about right?

    I make hawks and hawk handles also work great for some garden tools. Can I order a box of at least 20 handles? A box of handles and a matching drift would really be ok too ;-)

    Looks like the blade caught the flash from the camera on the first 2 pictures. It might be my phones screen. I can see the handle and it looks really well done.

    Love the handle and brass and black cross guard. The fit and finish on the handle assembly is great. The partial finish on the blade doesn't match the super clean look of the handle. It's still a nice looking knife.

    Leaf spring off of a mid 90 jeep. No I can't afford store bought steel, really. So I have 2 6ft. Pieces of leaf spring and no seriouse knife makers around here.
