Actually the melting point of mild steel is higher than the melting point of cast iron

Just buy a punch handle from lowes or home depot

A pressure washer with the high pressure tip will clean a lot of rust and crud off of old tools
saves a lot of wire wheeling and sanding ( not to mention the dust and mess involved )

I have never attached an anvil to its base
I have used various way to capture the base to keep the anvil from moving around or falling off its base wheter a stump ,boards or a metal stand.
My vote is for a metal stand

its main function was for de- burring parts like in a machine shop

I have 3 five inch and one 8 inch post vises all mounted on square steel tubing 4 feet in the ground in concrete.
Getting ready to mount another 7 inch one in the ground so only about 27 inches high to use as a striking vise.
Willtake a cut wheel and cut a V in each jaw to form a square to hold hardy tools etc
