The topic is labeled posting courtesy, Some members do not understand that concept. Why did I post, and later suggest you read #32? because it pointed out over 150 posts per day here keeps us very busy, it explained WHY some of us get annoyed at some posts.

The suggestion of all posts being moderated/approved before getting posted to the forum would actually mean some posts would NEVER get posted.

Check the flash point, then try it. Its the speed of the quench that give us a properly hardened blade, the steel doesn't care what the material is. Most oils have a cooling rate close enough. By blending in other fluids such as Diesel fuel or transmission fluid or Veggie oils you can adjust the speed of your quench to get it where you, and the steel are happy.

You don't have to use a finished blade, cut off a section of 1095 a few inches long, no need to even grind it for testing this.

I have a better idea, how about People proof read their OWN posts before hitting the enter key? also correctly placing them in the sections of the forum will help too, rather than just posting everything in general blacksmithing? But since they wont do it, we have to. We do understand the new member needing time to find things and understand the site, they are given breaks. That is why there is a tag for Jr., Reg., and Sr. members. When a member has over 100 posts, they are tagged Senior Member and are expected to know a little about smithing and this site. Even when that number of posts is reached in a very short time, we assume since they have so much to say here, that they should know something.

I am Dyslexic, and because of that a typo king. I have to correct my own posts a bit also. Mostly I think people rush on to the next item at hand, not thinking about checking themselves. Many times all I have to do is correct a single letter or character mistyped in a URL to get it working, or re size a photo for an edit to a members post, and there is a tag showing when and who edited a post, like the one I added at the bottom of this post. Also we Private message people if there is a real problem. After a few of those posts getting no reply, we are forced to state the problem publicly in the forum to insure they get the message. So we do not try to embarrass every member that makes a mistake in a post.

There is a lot more going on behind the computer screens than most members imagine. I am sorry when I have gotten short about this, but I average over an hour a day just with my job here, add in the time of the15 or so other mods, and admins, and you might get a start understanding the massive amount of labor hours just to keep this place running smoothly. I get upset when people with hundreds of posts force more free work on me, mainly because they refuse to try. Many of the "problem" posters are the same 2 or 3 people every day, and after a month or so of playing Mother to them, I really do want to make them stop.

all I heard was what you posted about tempering the anvil. re tempering an anvil is not usually needed, unless it got over heated somehow, then it would need a full heat treat.

Also tempering is only one part of the heat treat process. Dr Jim knows a few things, but at the same time if it works as it is, why mess with it... and if you think heating an anvil is hard, try getting it quenched fast enough to harden in the first place.

I paid about $250 US for my 100# Kohlswa a few years ago, its still like new. Its so nice to know $3 is too much for a nice anvil, I never realized 15 yr old kids bought and sold so many these days. :D

What is unclear about the word MOVED ? as for why, an anvil posted in, example, cold worked metal, should be clear on its own to why it was moved to the Anvils section, if not, is that person really observant enough to be trusted working near hot iron On a more serious note, its a waste of time to write the obvious for moving things. We are too busy already and don't need to look for more work to do.

they have a MOVED: tag and a relay to the new location. Left there as a redirect for a week or so. you have not seen it ?

what about the poster than not only reposts the same question all over this site even HI-jacking others threads, with proof that he wont even read reply's to his own post, is his asking the same thing over and over again, days or weeks later.

One person suggested we ignore what we don't like, easy to do ya think? How many posts are being made each day? It is over 150 lately and its growing, with only 4 or 5 posts being mislabeled each day or posted in places no one would think to look for that topic, its harder to search through, as only 4 per day is 120 in only a month.

If staff ignored those posts, or mistyped URL's or a improper photo posted in the gallery, we may as well remove ALL sub sections and only have the one Blacksmith topic in the forum with everything thrown together. Because that is how a few members insist on posting here now, so we relocate them to organized areas. But even then, we have been accused of deleting a persons post, when they refused to notice the redirect memo that is normally left behind to show a post was moved. Yes sometimes a post does get lost, and I am very sorry for those I have messed up, I correct what I can soon as I am notified of it. When I have to spend an hour or more a day relocating or correcting, mistakes can happen. Also if they were thinking when they first posted, we would not have had to try to relocate or correct it in the first place.

We try to keep things organized so people can sort through the nearly 9,000 members and their over 110,000+ posts here, Maybe some like the idea of a library as a large pile of books, most people I know like having some order so they can find things. Either we staff try to get things orderly or we Ignore them and let chaos reign, cant have it both ways. The start of order is asking members to help.

The are many reasons for warping, from built up stress in the metal to bumping it while heating in the coals. Give us complete information, and you can get more accurate information about what is going on.

I already had the chop saw, got it a year before on sale for $60, I hate to admit it, but at HF

when I built my brick side draft I used a little over 900 hard building bricks and 85 hard fire brick, I paid $20 for an abrasive saw blade for my chop saw, after a third of a cut I removed brick and cooled in water to prevent heat fractures. when I had the forge and chimney built, I only used up about half the saw blade.

for comparison: they wanted $40 per day for a rental, and $150 to purchase a diamond saw.

not seen it, but Tim is a good man, and a good knife maker.

I forged 440 and 304, works harder than simple steels, but no worse than tool steels. I never forged 304L so I do not know if that makes a difference on the forge or not.

There is MIG wire for SS and I was advised to use straight argon, not the CO2/Argon mix. So I don't know how the mixed gass work either. Some expert huh:

I will add: While this forum is mainly adults talking about work, we welcome children to join in, as long as they act responsibly and we have many members that are children, and they are wonderful to have around here

This does not mean having fun is bad, but when people repeatedly post nonsense, its annoying and too much is spam. If a person posts nonsense too often, then Staff will step in and polity "advise" them about spamming, as not all spam is a clear "Buy my stuff" type post.

We are close to 9,000 members and that's a lot of work to keep this site going, we cant do the repairs and general maintenance while we are distracted by removing spam, or correcting misinformation.

I would like to remind all the membership, that everyone admins, mods, etc, here at I Forge Iron are volunteers, and we only have so much time available to do the work needed here, its a shame we have to spend so much of our time dealing with other things, rather than trying to improve the site.

Just remember that wakipedia entries are not always posted by informed people. The same as with our forum, there are clueless posting all sorts of things. But unlike here, not a lot of informed people to correct the myths. Most post with good intent, a few do it just to be noticed. I do use waki, but I make sure and follow up on leads for primary resources.

over 3 years ago I dumped the dial up, and got faster connection. So my Email changed, but they still have my very one one listed... Joe said he cant even get in there to fix things anymore?

even tho I used my cad fror layout, working heavy construction I am used to blue prints, and the size space it represents, most people do not so use what works, to assist my wife I used tiny white flags, and marking paint for the lay out in the location before I built the shop so she could see and have some input Even the forge and work tables. If you don't want to mark the ground, a rope works well also cardboard boxes for the forge, press or what have you. Move them around , a empty box moves easier than a press does :)
