  1. I need to find some spring steel sheet in .032" thick. I am tiring to repair a spring chair for a friend. I need about a 12" square of material or a strip 2" wide by 3'. Thanks in advance for your help.
  2. That is not an original leg vise bushing. I have forged new washers and I have also turned them on a lathe. I have heard these called oval washers because they have a curved inner surface to match the curve on the shoulder on the vise screw. This is important because it allows the the screw to tighten with even pressure on the on the outer jaw of the leg vise. Prevents scoring in the screw shoulder and the hole on the front jaw.
  3. If you cant keep up with orders and cant afford a power hammer raise your prices. If you cant swing an air hammer buy an old mechanical hammer for a couple of grand and get to work. A professional smith should be making enough money to afford the basic equipment.
  4. Most likely a Peter Wright anvil. I would not pay more than a $1 a pound for it, less if you could get away with it. All of the edges are worn away and chipped.
  5. A fuller is used for fullering. It is used to make an indentation in a piece of hot metal. To make it longer or to make a shoulder. It is used also to divide a section of a forging from another at a change in thickness.
  6. The first one is not a hammer it is a fuller it is a struck tool used by blacksmiths. The second tool is a masons driving hammer used to strike chisels and smaller stone drills.
  7. Nice meeting you in Memphis

  8. Jump on it it almost looks new. Vulcans are not the best brand but they are serviceable. Good for a beginner. Its worth about 175 to 200 bucks. You can always get your money out if you loose interest in the craft or upgrade.
  9. I tried this out today, it worked like a charm, it saved me a huge amount of time. Thank you so much for sharing. If you lived anywhere near me I would buy you a beer.
  10. I was working in 18 gauge enameling steel. No need to anneal this kind of steel it is almost pure iron. I was also worried about scaling as it was so thin. I took a class on french style stake repousse this was the method I was taught. It took about 6-7 hours to make a acanthus leaf.
  11. I just made a steel faced wrought iron hammer just to try it. It took me three tries to weld steel on. First time I could not get the barbs on the steel to grip the iron bar. Second time I burnt the steel. Third time It worked well. That is one of the harder things I have done. Im sure If I did it agian it would go a lot faster. I also made an acanthus leaf using just hammers and stakes in cold sheet iron. That was hard too.
  12. I called the manufacturer because I needed to modify a brush tool he said all of their bits are 1045. In addition I did spark test against a known sample it checked out with my 1045 sample. Also it forged and and heat treated the same as 1045. I think small air chisel bits tools are S series or similar because they need to be tougher and harder to cut steel.
  13. Most jack hammer bits are 1045 unless you get old ones. 1045 is not much harder than hot rolled steel.
  14. I made this vise tool to grip round stock for heading. It was forged from 1" square about 10" long. The lip was made by using a butcher and set hammer. Sam Salvati was my striker and was quite helpful.I am very proud of this tool and hope to get a lot of use out of it. it has 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2" holes and space for one more if I need a special size.
  15. Sounds like he has an unsustainable economic model.
  16. If it is really 200 lbs that is not an unfair price to be asking. It will be a bit of a hard sell it seems to have good clean edges on it though. Why begrudge a guy trying to make a buck you don't like it haggle or walk away.
  17. Glen, I accept your authority on this issue. These will be my last words on the subject honestly your guidelines are quite subjective. I have not been giving a logical expiation as to why or how what I said was offensive. Other than a overly broad statement that something you would not say in front of a church or that this is a family site. What church who's family? I have heard parents say some horrible things to their children and vise versa . I also have been offended by statements made in some churches I have attended. Furthermore have heard that word used in church out side of a strictly biblical context. I am sure these things seemed perfectly normal to the people saying them at the time. I think you should have a more clear set of guidelines so people may have a solid idea of what sort of language is prohibited. So they don't embarrass themselves by having their post censored. Censorship is something a lot of people find to be very offensive by the way. Anybody on the web is going to be exposed to things orders of magnitude more offensive (than the word I used) even on this site. You should read more of the posts around here and see what people are getting away with saying. It is mostly done in the form of innuendo with out the use of "bad words". I am not easily offended by that sort of thing so I let it go. The word I used in not even considered a profanity according to the Oxford English Dictionary. If some one was offended by that sort of thing they are going to spend a lot of time and energy during there lives being offended. If I was explicitly told not to use this sort of word I would glady abide even if I thought it was unnecessary. As for the prayer list issue I have no issue with it I'm a live and let live kind of guy, I wish those well who request it in my own way. If someone asks me to pray I will as to not offend, as I know this is very important to a lot of good people. Nor would I consider it my place to critical of anyone's sincerely held beliefs. Tim
  18. Why not take one of those bickiron tops I make out of forklift fork and weld one of those on top.
  19. That Ball peen is a hand made machinist chipping hammer for driving a cold chisel. I have one it was hand forged filed and trued up on a lathe. the peen has a flat on the tip that was used to rivet and work in tight spaces. These hammers are not that common. Keep it and enjoy it.
  20. So what you are saying is the most sensitive person sets the standards?
  21. The anvil is amazing BTW. It has good sharp edges and good rebound. It will need to be wire brushed or sand blasted as it has a good coat of rust and flaking paint. It has some torch gouging here and there though. I would like to find what person decided that an anvil was a good stand for torch cutting and hop in a time machine and make sure they never got born and spread that mind virus . I have seen more beautiful anvils messed up by people using them as stands to cut on. I have a basicly unused 222 hay budden with about 25%of the horn just cut off. I gave up a sunny beautiful Saturday and 125$ in gas to get it that I should have spent kayaking. John the guy who sold it to me has a amazing junk garden by the way and lots of old rusty machines he is selling cheep. He probably has 500 tuns of old iron in his yard no other anvils though. I also picked up a small fisher type rectangular saw makers anvil It was sitting on top of a pile of scrap iron mistaken for a cast iron weight It weighs 55 lbs I paid 40 bucks for it. I few people called him up and tried to chew him down on price after I made the deal. They complained that because of the chipping paint it was worth less money. We laughed about that. That anvil was a real deal. I will post pictures as soon as I get it cleaned up.
