  1. Hey Bigred thank for putting the photo's on here, not sure why the didn't come up when I put them on the post I did it like I always do. hmmmm Backwards....... That would be an interesting drive LOL I know it is worth it the drive, but I have a friend who lives up that way and would like to incorporate a visit while I am up there. I dont think the fire pot would mount to the bottom, notice how the side of the firepot matches the "cut out" on the side of the forge. What do you mean by "creapage"???
  2. Hey yall, I wasn't planning on buying a forge, seeing that I just built the forge of my dreams, but a deal came up that I couldn't give up. A while back a friend of mine came over and watched me do some smithing, and he thought that he would like to do that, so he went out, bought a forge, blower, hammers tongs, and a anvil. About a month after he bought all that, he came over for a lesson, so since he live about 2 hours away we worked about 10 hours in the shop, and the next day he was so sore he couldn't move, and decided that blacksmithing was TOOOO much work for him. Well the other day he called and asked if I wanted to buy all his blackmsmith tools, and for $265 I bought all of it. The forge is a cast iron Champion with a clinker breaker, quench traugh, and metal "rack". All I know about the Blower is that it is a Royal blower, Yall know any thing about those????? The anvil is 100Lbs, and is (as far as I know) a Peter Wright, but on second thought it might be a Haybudden. I have to go pick it up some time in the next 14 day's, with gas being what it is, I need to find more than one reason to drive an hour and a 3 hours there and back. Now for Photo's So I have a question on the forge.... Lets make that questions LOL. #1 any idea what model it is? #2 Why is the firepot higher than the "floor" of the forge? #3 What is forge like this worth? Thanks yall, Trip
  3. Great video Dave!!!!!!! It's also a good for those who have always used the "drill and drift" method. :)
  4. Trip

    Show me your vise

I got this vice from a 30 year blacksmith tool collection, it is a 5" Columbia
  5. I use galvanized 12" vent pipe and it works fine, with the pipe being 3 feet above the fire, I don't worry about any fumes from the galvanization. If there is any fumes, it goes right up the flue.
  6. https://picasaweb.google.com/112684238867987189105/PicasaUpLite#5730329083824205682 The anvil is a 115 Lb Mousehole, that a gentleman from Louisville Ky gave me!!!!! I used the same design as John C Campbell for the anvil stand, and that piece of steel next to the anvil is a homemade swage block, and it also hold the anvil in place.
  7. Hey thanks, Yeah this coal I got is HARD to break up, so i am putting it (The big chunks) in my side draft forge hood while I work, and let it "cook" in to coke. Seams to work ok, it makes it easier to break up, and is turned in to coke.
  8. Yes it does turn to coal, and "caves" up. Also after burning that coal in my forge for 8 hours yesterday, there was only 1 clinker, and it was the size of a half dollar piece, but there was a LOT of ash.
  9. Hey yall, Thanks for the input!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I made a video yesterday about the coal, hoping it would give yall a better idea of what in the world it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOw2qR-UQWw Thanks, Trip
  10. You can weld Cast iron or steel, with a stick welder, just need the right kind of rod.
  11. Look's like you did a good job teaching Dave, but I think you were glad to "practice" teaching, when you were at my blacksmith shop, and to prepare you for what was to happen to your hammer. :D Not the first time I was used as a guinea pig!!! LOL
  12. I asked him what type of coal it is, and he just said, "western Kentucky Lump Coal".???? Just a few minutes ago, an old man called me, and is giving me 1,000 pounds of Bituminous coal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That will give me 1,500 pounds!!! Question, how long will 1,500 pounds of coal last me???
  13. Well I just got done trying it out, it is the WIERDEST coal I have EVER seen, I have NOOOOO idea what it is. It is really shiney, dark DARK black, not much dust, it will coke & will "cave" up. All I do know is that I got 500LBs for $50, and it burns double barrel HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first metal I heated was a piece of 1/2" square, and it took NO time at all to get it to a forging heat!!!!! SO far so good!!!!!!!! Praise the Lord!!!!!
  14. Sounds like you have a good friend, to bring you coal. LOL yeah, on my Google status message I put "I wish Santa would bring me some coal" LOL I think I have found a good source of coal!!!!! I put an add on Craigs List saying that I was looking for coal, and a few minutes ago a gentleman called and said that he sells lump coal for $0.10 a pound. Is that a good deal, or no???
  15. What is this here "bolster" plate yer talkin about????
  16. Yeah, I like making those heart hooks, I am thinking of making a how to video on that subject. I know what you mean about not being able to see the metal, I found the same problem when I first watched it but by then I just had to make it out of the film on hand. I think I am going to build a short steel table (about the same height as the top of my anvil) and paint the top white, and after I finish a technique I can lay the piece on it. Sorry about that though. As for the lighting, well I am still in the process of setting up my new shop, and in some places the light is poor, wish we could have watched that last clip, but right after we finished filming it, the camera battery was about dead.
  17. First off, let me be the first to welcome you to I Forge Iron, and to the wonderful art of blacksmithing. Here is a link to the best source of info I could find on your forge, from the info you gave. Do you have photo's of your forge? Here is a video about blacksmithing you might enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBmC0Mfcs1A Keep us posted on your progress.
  18. I believe when you can design a project, forge all the parts, and the FINISH the project as designed, and also know the basic skills of a smith (tapering, punching, forge welding, riveting, and scrolling) then you are a smith. Me? Well I am a part time smith, full time burden. :D
  19. I think I will try out a bag of it...... that is if that place is still open!!!! I have used actual blacksmith coal before, and I liked how it formed a "cave". Will Anthracite coal do that?? Thanks
  20. How can I tell the difference between Bituminous and Anthracite coal, when I look at it? I found a place just down the road that sells anthracite coal........ that is if they are still open, I tried to call them and i got a messaged that said their phone was disconnected, so I call the camber of commerce to see if that was true and THEIR phone was disconnected!!!!!! that's not a good sign
  21. so, I just got my new forge built, but now after just 3 day's of forging, I am out of coal!!!!!!!!! GRRR if it's not one thing its another!! LOL I found a place that sells coal just down the road, but it is anthracite coal, and from what I read most blacksmiths like bituminous coal. I have NO idea what type of coal I have been using. I got it from a friend, who gets it from an old school boiler room. All I know about it is, that when lit, it smokes like CRAZY but after a good flame is created there isn't as much smoke, and it takes a little while to form coke. Also it doesn't "cave" like regular blacksmith coal. Got any idea of what I have been using? The closest place that sells bituminous coal is over a 2 and a half hours drive one way!!!!! and I can only afford a few bags right now, but later on I would like to buy a ton or 2.
  22. If you use a sink, I would recommend building the bottom up with fire brick, until the you have a new bottom of 4", and also, I would line the sides with firebrick. it will make it heavy, but it wont burn out ANY time soon. And if you decide t line it with firebrick, you will need to buy some fire clay and mix it in the mortar.
  23. This message is for all, but is directed to Thomas Powers. It was brought to my attention by my good friend Fiery Furnace", that the way I made my statement on quote number 17 may have seemed disrespectful and that I should have kept the abbreviated language out of it. I will admit that as a christian I should have kept the abbreviated language out, and for this I humbly ask for God's and your forgiveness. Also I meant NO disrespect, and I pray that none was taken, on the way I made my statement, and you felt that I was being disrespectful then I humbly ask for your forgiveness again. Thank you Fiery Furnace for bringing this to my attention, you are a good man, and God will bless you for it. Trip
