  1. Cool build!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I wanted to convert a Gassoline log splitter to electric, would I just need to get a motor, or a motor pump combo????
  2. Hey yall, As some of you know, I use a coal forge, and give anyone who uses a gas for a hard time....... well looks like I might be eating some crow, so go ahead and pass the salt and pepper!!! LOL Where I live it gets VERRY HOT AND HUMID, and with the coal forge it gets hot FAST in the shop. so I was wondering if a gas (propane) forge would help keep things a little cooler in the shop during the summer months????? I know it is still going to produce heat in the shop, but is it as much as a coal forge?? Also does any one know of any plans online that shows how to build a gas forge? I found some, but not to sure on how well it's construction is. What do you think? http://zoellerforge.com/simplegasforge.html I would like to build a gas forge that will get hot enough to forge weld if the need arises. Thanks, Trip
  3. at this time I don't have any panels, and I don't remember the numbers for the ones I planed on making, I will have to do some math..... oh goody. lol the solar powered hammer was a late night idea, and I might still do it, but maybe as a add on later, or if I come into some money. thanks for the info!!!!! Trip
  4. Thanks for the idea, and resource!!!!! I am having to take a break from working on it today, I hurt my back and knee yesterday. Hope to get back to fabricating the motor mount tomorrow. Well due for financial reasons I am going to have to sell my Champion 400 16" blower to continue work on the tire hammer. :( Here is a photo of it If any one is interested in it, you can email me at kyblacksmith@gmail.com or call me at (270)618-1325. Trip
  5. OK this link SHOULD work. I got an idea for the power source for my hammer. It might be stupid, crazy, ect, but I am self sufficient minded, and I like the idea, so just bear with me. :) Instead of using a 1hp 1750rpm AC motor, use a 1HP 1750rpm DC motor, and then hook that up to solar panels on the roof of my shop!!! I found a motor that I think will work http://www.ebay.com/itm/1HP-1750RPM-90V-56C-FRAME-PERMANENT-MAGNET-DC-MOTOR-/220728746438?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33647561c6 Yes I know it is pricey but it's the best deal I could find so far. Now I just need to figure out how many solar panels I need. Oh and also before you start thinking (solar panels are going to cost an arm and a leg) I can build my own 75watt solar panels for a third of retail price. :) So what do yall think? Trip
  6. hey yall, I got the anvil post completely welded on the base, and painted. http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/ Today I hope to make the motor mount assembly, and treadle assembly. So far I got 4 hours of work, and $460 (give or take) in it. Good, bad, or just ok? Trip
  7. Well here is a update photo on my hammer. http://m1109.photobucket.com/albumview/albums/kyblacksmith/IMG_20120715_104304.jpg.html. Does anyone have a good photo of the lower treadle assembly???? Trip
  8. The feather in the hat was a dead give away of who it was...... that is if you know Dave good enough. :) LOL
  9. Yeah welding on that tire didn't sound fun or safe. I am thinking about using a brake clutch system instead.
  10. Nice tongs Dave!!!!!!!!! I am going to have to try to make a set of tongs like that.
  11. OK Today I plan on grinding the weld groove in the anvil post base, and the mast of the hammer!!!!! Thinking about a new "head" design. Instead of the tire in the front, have it in the back of the hammer, then have a piece of rod (1" Round steel) run to the front, and that will turn the solid steel wheel in the front with the toggle system. now was that clear as mud or not??? ;) What do yall think? Trip
  12. Hey yall, Well I made the purchase most of the metal needed for my tire hammer!!!!!! I also got a set of plans for the tire hammer, but I am having trouble understanding the plans. Does any one know of where I can find a exploded view of the Clay Spencer Tire Hammer? A exploded view will help me understand where part this and that goes, because I don't know what part this and that is!!!! LOL I will try to get photo's of the project as I go, but right now it is just a pile of scrap metal, but it should be transforming in to a hammer here soon.......... I hope. Trip
  13. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a deer hunter, I have ALWAYS wanted to forge a deer antler like that. You do GREAT work!!!! HMMMMM wonder how it could be built in to rustic furniture..........hmmmm....... I feel the need for a new shop project!!! :) Thanks for posting!!!!
  14. I have found that using a different type of shielding gas helps with the splatter issue. Try a 90/10 (90%Argon and 10% Oxy), works GREAT, even for Stainless Steel.
  15. I would go with MIG!!!! I have a Millermatic 212 Auto set, and it is GREAT, I have taught several people who have never touched a welder, and within 5 minutes their welds look like a row of dime's!!!!! Also if you go with MIG, I would suggest getting a 90/10 (90% Argon, 10% OXY) shielding gas, with it you will get better penetration, and cleaner welds. I also have a Lincoln buzz box, but I never use it, always use MIG. Just my 2 cents worth
  16. hey yall, sorry I haven't gotten back to answer some of your questions about what I am trying to forge weld. my laptop crashed AGAIN, and I am borrowing a laptop to write this. The only type of metal I have ever tried to forge weld is mild steel. I used to be able to forge weld pretty good, but for about 7 months I didn't have a shop since I was in the process of building a shop on the new farm. So now I am having some trouble getting back in to the swing of things. I am having trouble with pretty much any type of weld (as in lap weld, drop tongs weld, ect), it seams that I am getting it hot enough, and I'm not killing it when I hit it, and I put plenty of flux on it. So you can see why I am a little confused as to what I am doing wrong. I am going to try to do some forge welding some this week, but I just bought the metal to build a tire hammer, and as you can imagine I am a little excited to get on that project. :) Thanks, Trip
  17. What size metal did you use for the trivet and sconce?
  18. Well since I am probably the biggest tight wad out there, I am a pretty good scrounger. I already have a 2500 RPM motor that came out of a washing machine, and a motor from an old wood lathe. As for the "pickins", well there is a recycle yard down the road, and several more in the near by towns. As for when I need it, well, probably the sooner the better, since I am developing some serious never damage in my hammering hand, so my goal is to have one built by the end of the next 30 day's. Trip
  19. I actually just got off the phone talking to Dave about this very subject. He did let me use his tire hammer once, and I got to use one at JCCFS, and I have to admit I like the tire hammer. But, I also got to use a treadle hammer. Between yall, and Dave, I think I am going to go with the tire hammer, but the survivalist in me is screaming "build the treadle hammer!!!", but the business man in me say's "build the tire hammer you dummy!!!!!" LOL I feel like my 2 personalities are sitting on my shoulders yelling at each other, like you would see in a cartoon. LOL I feel confident that I will go with the tire hammer, and hopefully go get some metal this week. So I will be asking a LOT more questions before it is over with. LOL Thanks, Trip
  20. Hey yall, Thanks for the info. But, I got another question.... er make that questions. :) If I bought all scrap metal, how much would it cost me to make a Clay Spencer Inline Treadle hammer, and/tire hammer? Thanks, Trip
  21. That was funny when Roy went to grab peters hammer off the anvil. lol had some one grabbed the hammer off my anvil last week in the shop, and I slapped the back of his hand. Thanks for posting the video
  22. Well I would say my legs could hold up since I can leg press 800Lb's (i weigh about 170), So I would say that I could hold up, and I break a sweat just peeling an orange anyways. LOL
  23. Hey yall, I know that I wrote a topic a while back about a helve hammer vs tire hammer, but now I am starting to think that a Clay Spencer Inline Treadle Hammer might be more of what I need. Here is what would be using it the most for. Tapering (not to big metal, but bigger than I would want to hand hammer), punching, chiseling, tooling, and using smithin Magician. The biggest metal I would forge would be some thing like a rail road spike, and just metal that I wouldn't want to hand hammer. I am thinking that this would be cheaper to build than a tire or helve hammer. Am I right? Thanks, Trip
  24. Haven't tried yet, went driving in the near by towns looking for new clients. will let you know by Tuesday (got a part time job on Monday) Thanks yall!!!!! Trip
  25. If I was going to buy that rifle, I would give $150 for it and NO higher than $175
