  1. no frosty i dont have clean coal, but that helped me find a way to sho him that i am a blacksmith. and maybe that does make you a grey smith, ill have to ask my lil bro
  2. So i was talking to my 8 year old brother today about blacksmithing. When i told him that i considered myself a blacksmith he said nooo you arent a blacksmith. I said'' well how do you figue that.'' He came back at me and said '' well bubba (that is my name to him) you are white not black so that makes you a whitesmith.'' I couldnt stop laughing for the next 20 minutes. Sometimes i am kinda proud of the boy, hopefully one day he will follow in my footsteps and become a member here so he too can one day be a whitesmith!!!
  3. well i hope the pics come through it is my first anvil. small but im soooo very proud. sorry cant get the pics to come up but it is a cast tool steel anvil that looks like a peter wright but no markings.
  4. Going to get my anvil today. Will post pics when i get it home.
  5. The emerson is a good anvil, but price is pretty high, if the columbian is around the same weight and a better price i would go for it.
  6. my buddy gave me a burner that he was going to use in his grill( he had a old chicken grill thing). But it shot a propane flame out 4 foot and in my forge it burnt through 4 inches of kaowool and the side of the forge(about 1/4'' thick) in about 5 mins.So i think it was alot hotter than 3000.
  7. i went to bid on it and the auction ended
  8. I just finished my new homemade post vice. I will try to post pics tomorrow. For the jaws I used some angle iron, but i didnt get it lined up correctly so they will have to be replaced. For the body part i used some small u-channel (or at least i think that is what they are called). For the screw i took the screw portion out of one of my mom's old jacks. and for the post I used some more angle iron.
  9. My shop is relatively clean. I sweep once or twice a week and reorginize after every 3 or 4 forging sessions
  10. This post really kind of reminds me of myself. I am 13, 6 foot and 150 pounds. My step dad is 6'3 310 pounds and for general forging i use a 5-6 pound hammer and i use it really well (not a ding on my anvil yet after using it 6 days a week for a year). But my step dad was using my old anvil with my favorite hammer(a big no-no!) and you could just see him struggle and with every hit he either hit the steel half way and put a ding or just plain out missed. So it doesn't matter if you use a 6 pound hammer or a 1 pound hammer, it matters only if you move metal and how efficent you are at doing it.
  11. Does anyone have plans to build a japanese box bellows?
  12. how do i join the alabama forge counsil, i live in pell city
  13. Joe is my idol. I try everything he tries, sometimes I think he does stuff just to show people that young people can do the same things that more experienced people can do it just might take us a little longer. That is why i admire him. I also admire all the other people on this site they are also very helpful. (sometimes it is kinda nice to have those more experienced people)
  14. hey joe, I just made my first letter opener using your technique. But in your video about when you got back from vacation in germany and you showed us that link of damascus, you went in the house behind your shop i figured that was your house. Please correct me if i am wrong.
  15. yea, thanks for all the replies. I was embarrassed.
