  1. How would you guys go about demagnetizing an anvil?   I 'm pretty sure I have read somewhere that when welding wrap a lead around a corner of whats being welded on and that prevents magnetic build up for lack of a better term.  If so, would wrapping a lead around the anvil and laying a short bead on the bottom work?   From what I understand a batch of anvils has quite a magnetic field most likely from being Blanchard ground.

    Any thoughts and ideas?

  2. I've ordered myself an anvil and need an address in Spokane to use.  The anvil will be held at the shippers for a friend to pick up,  Anyone in Spokane/Coeur d'Alene that would be willing to help me out?

  3.    Was watching a tong making video on YouTube and the guy draws a bunch of reference lines with a sharpy before he starts.  The way the camera angle around 5 min in a light bulb went on for me!  Just lay the stock corner to corner on the hardy hole,  tip up and the shoulder can be started on the far side nice easy 45deg without having to draw any lines that will rub off when you need them.  Just have to have a little energy left to play after the day job to give it a whirl.

  4. Made another one,  All was going great til I was ready to start rolling the loop....   and then its oops  cut the hook on the wrong side...  :(  picked the fattest spot a quick twist, reset a shoulder and run it thru the half round hardy tool.  Stretched it out a little,  doesn't balance as nice as it should but it may be alright with the right candle in it.  Did manage to save it though.  started out with a piece of 3/8 sq  maybe 10"  long.   Another dozen and I might have something that someone will buy...

  5. Had an hour or more in the shop today.  Started with a trimmed edge off some plate from work.  1/2 sq and maybe12" long.  turned it into this.  Only major flaw I have in it, is the socket is not thin enough to flex a little.  Came out really close to all my size specs,  which is a bonus.

  6. Better read up on heat treating some more.  But yes when you cooled it you made it brittle hard.  Would have been better to just lay it on the ground for a bit til cool then shape the other end.   Most springs are oil hardening.

It very may have had micro fractures  in it from it's previous life.  just never know

  7. Wire wheel it till you can see what you have,  all depends on the nature of the marks after that whether it needs a flap disk on an angle grinder or a sanding block,  may need a light touch with a file and nothing more.  Hard to say what your best approach is without pics.  :)  Could always use it a little and see just how much transfers
