Sweet Score! Just might be enough to put you on the naughty list to get that extra coal in the stocking :)

would they have heated just the cutting edge w/ a torch hardened/tempered on the aluminum handled knives?
-
I wonder how much better the new tractor would fair if it had some lift while it was pulling. the old steam model had the chain hooked up far higher than what was on the JD. I remember from horse logging, you hooked as short as you could to get as much lift on the front of the log to make it easier for the horses to pull. bet any money that the JD was really light on the rear axle

Any commercial truck places nearby, look for mudflap or cheater springs(top half of a bunk that folds down) in a logging truck. looks very close to a cheater spring.

Thanks for the ideas guys. How would you go about a finger guard on a design like this Rich, or is it even possible?

I've made a few more knives similar to this one. The one has been field tested, been through 2 deer and an elk and still hair spitting sharp so the owner tells me. Super happy with it. Only issue is the handle gets a bit slippery and he tends to slide up onto the blade a little when skinning with it. Really like the flow the shape has, and it's such a nice feel in the hand. was thinking maybe put a bunch of file marks across the handle. Was kinda wondering if anyone had any thoughts on other ways to rectify the situation?

Could always do a ring test on it and see how sound it is, doesn't really help with what speeds it may be designed to run at. Or how you might set it up on something. I've seen something similar someplace before but couldn't begin to tell you what the machine it mounts to might look like. Rather cool find just the same.

just saw this fan at Home Hardware for whatever it's worth

Does anyone know what the difference in the jets is between kerosene and gas? Kinda curious

Simple elegance love it. Really going to have to steal that idea.

I turned my own race in mine and it seems to be working fine.

Managed to get control of the remote and was watching Lost Treasures, think it was. Anyways was about the Staffordshire horde. Very cool bit of history and a wicked looking seax was made part way in... kinda made my night.

works been stupid busy, barely keep the logging trucks on the road right now... maybe if I have a weekend I can finish it up and get some pics up

Needs a few finishing touches. Sharpened all of the neighbours knives in about 10 minutes. Had thought about a seat, really don't need one. Gr. Grandpas grinder is over in Dads shop. Its a 2 pedal affair, strapping frame and a old steel seat. Actually have to work a little to keep that one going round. The stones heavy enough on my grinder to need very little effort to keep it moving. wil try to get some picks up soon

It was out of round by about 3/4". Angle grinder and diamond wheel brought it back concentric. It is out of balance by a fair amount, but if I took all the chips out right now I'd have very little stone left. I do agree a far more ornate stand would be nice. but at the moment I'd like to get the old girl back in service. The stone is the beautiful part to me though. Never seen one quite this size.
-
Steel finally came in so I can start building the stand for my 32" grindstone. Have a feeling that the arm I made for it could be quite a bit shorter. Guess the shorter it is the faster the stone goes but less torque.
For reference the squared end of the shaft is 7/8" sq.
The other thing I have been hemming and hawing on is small gussets in the corners. I know it won't make a lot of difference strength and racking wise with the 2" tubing, but it does give it a little more finished look. What are your thought on it.
Guess that's about it for now.

Any chance that it could of had a new face welded on at some point and the x may have been to mark it for that? just an idle thought I had.

That would be a bead breaking hammer for tires. I have the dubious pleasure of using one on occasion to swap out tires on our logging trucks.
-
carve a hole in your stump to mount it and it looks like it'll work great. it's a nice little score
-
That would be them. Funny how stuff slips away when your not using it. You'd think something like that would stay stuck after driving a team of Percherons for 2 years logging.

Thanks anvilman appreciate the info.
Newbie don't know about the marks but they really look like the end of a cold chisel and a there area few that look like center punch marks. Not sure that tongs would beat the side up that far down. Maybe something to do with plows or horse shoes being turned I really don't know other than there is a lot of dings.

Nothing much in my stocking, Fontanini anvil was a little to heavy for Santa to ship I guess. But my wife is super pleased. found a cheap wire basket and made a handle for it. She'd been looking for an egg basket all summer :) as a bonus all the hens have laid an egg so fresh toads in the holes for breakfast.
