  1. are you sure it's a mousehole? it looks alot like a william foster to me, they stamped the date on their anvils Josh
  2. an angle grinder is the fastest (and if you're good the best) way to do it, i recognise them because i had the same issue when i started, take them down to a radius of about 1/2" - 3/4" radius depending on the lenght of the pein (smaller pein, smaller radius) Josh
  3. well done, are those marks from your pein? if so you may think about dressing the corners and rounding them off, it would stop that sharp edge Josh
  4. i know where there is one for $300 in a walnut block. Is it worth it??? It looks exactly like yours tim, I'll post a link to the add. I'm saving my money for a PH so I am not going to buy it... maybe....:D http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-tools-hand-tools-Blacksmith-Anvil-W0QQAdIdZ369470753

  6. you are probably 100% correct, a heulese is what i was told it was

  8. i got him on the phone! he still has it, apparently he never received my emaisl (typo on my part) he is going to the storage this weekend to get pics, as soon as i have them, you will have them!
  9. i think he got cold feet :( money is sitting on my desk waiting for his respones... gonna call him again tonight
  10. very nice for a first! from what I understand, ones that were used in the fur trade were very crude.... it should work very well
  11. cool! i love learning about anvils, i need to get a copy of AIA... mu guess of arourers' anvil was because it liiks alot like a "church windows" anvil that, from what iv read, was used for making armor.... prices here average $2.50-$4/lb depending on shape
  12. i have never seen an anvil like this, i'm guessing it is some kind of armourers' anvil??? http://ontario.kijij...QAdIdZ365895730 I am not in a position to buy, so it's fair game! Josh
  13. I am going to be calling again today, i dont think he would get cold feet, he is a member of the OABA with me, and he has 3 of them.... we had a conversation in person about it when he offered it to me, he says he HAS to get rid of it
  14. I havn't been able to get a response from him, but it is reserved for me until i say i cant take it. Now i need to figure out the motor and linkage
  15. my grandpa owns a 8 guage beretta, he can shoot it, im too afraid of it..... he shot a 8 point buck with a slug.... lets call it a not-so-clean kill
  16. 10guage with buck shot.....
  17. really nice! Probably a good idea about the blood and bone, why do you chop out the jaws? what are the specs on the blades? Josh
  18. i have been forging for three years now and i am completely self taught, i am STILL hit and miss with forge welding one peice to another, damascus requires hundreds of 100% perfect welds to be strong and useable... what will you use for head? coal? coke? LP? natural gas?? waste oil? do you know what fulx is? do you know what a quenchant is? do you know how to properly anneal, normalise, harden, and temper? do you know the steps in forge welding off the top of your head and under pressure? you say you have good steel for making damascus, what is it? what are its propeties? what grade is it? dose your forge reach welding teperatures? Not trying to put you down, but these are ALL things you MUST know before you try, i am sure that others on here can add more to this list I have been forging almost every night for 3 years and have sunk a TON of money into this and have yet to try pettern welding (one more thing! what is the difference between pattern welede and damascus?) Josh
  19. wht size of motor would i need to run this hammer? i am trying to figure costs to get it up and running
  20. I agree 100% with stewart, if you PAY GOOD MONEY for somthing you are more likley to get a GOOD QUALITY TOOL, and you will respect it better because you had to WORK for it and not pay pocket change for a XXXX forge/anvil that you wont respect to the same degree
  21. I have been offered a Hercules power hammer for $500. The owner sais it needs work (new motor set up)and that it is around a 50-60lb ram and has been outside for this winter. It is the first hammer that is local that i can afford. I'll get some pictures for you guys soon! any advise is very welcome, i will try to answer any questions as well as I can. Josh
