  1. There's a market alright. If I was a soldier I think a modern tomahawk would be an excellent implement to pack along for hand to hand combat or survival....... https://www.google.com/search?q=modern+combat+tomahawk&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=-HpkUvmUCc_figLjgYHgCw&ved=0CF0QsAQ&biw=1280&bih=850

  3. Take your mig tips out and see if they're clogged. It happens.
  4. I think so and it sounds like it's in good hands...... B)
  5. If it were mine I'd have it ground, just make sure the face of the anvil is level to the table of the grinder and not the base or it will be removing high spots instead of removing material from the whole face equally as it should be. Removing two MM won't affect the hardness or the integrity of the face plate imo but it could be said it won't do it any good either.....If you could be on hand when it's being ground that would be nice, then you could tell the operator when to stop................
  6. Well, I decided not to go with 1 1/4'' pipe and went to 1'' with good results I think. Even with the smaller pipe I had to kick the orifice up to .050 and it still seems a little lean. I used a cast iron bell fitting (1''/1.25'')on the end and it helps to prevent flame out although mounting it will be a little more challinging. The blue flame cone gets up to 6'' long at 20 psi......
  7. Holy XXXX! Nice score.....I've done pretty well at DD, but one time I was fishing some nice picture frames out of one and upset the prop holding up the metal lid which promptly smashed my hand between it and the bin rim..... :( ........The frames went on to the land fill, be careful.........
  8. Anvilitis affects mostly noobs who think if they get a 400lb monster the added mass will transform them into a human power hammer. I got tired of navigating around my 500lb'er so I sold it after 35 some years because it didn't move the material any better than my 165 and I don't do heavy striking at the anvil anymore aside from not having employees...... ..... If you can get a good deal on a biggie, by all means BUY IT.......... B)
  9. Maybe he'll show up here wanting advise.........I can think of one, don't weld high carbon steel with common mig wire. SS with 75/25 works much better......Probly on a tight budget...lol http://www.nme.com/news/bob-dylan/72846#1
  10. Well, the wee blighter is gone today on CL after being on for nearly 30 days...... :( ......But , they were asking $350....... ^_^ oh well...
  11. I'm curious about this little 56lb anvil.....It looks like a Peter Wright but there's no pritchel hole......??
  12. Assuming these burners use the same orifice, like .035 I guess one with a1/2'' pipe would need even less pressure to operate than one with 3/4''....... The reason for the larger upscaled burner is not for economy per say, they will be going in a big forge to create more BTU's than the smaller ones and I expect they will need more gas pressure. My 3/4'' units need 5 psi to make things start to happen right off and up to 15-20 psi when I want a real blast so I reckon a 1'' may need 7-8 psi at an idle........Would you say that is true Dodge?
  13. So, it would seem I could go up or down in scale but the length of burner tube may need to be adjusted in order to tune the flame....anyone disagree with that?................Thanks all......... B)
  14. Can a Zoller type burner be increased in size with good results? That is, I'm thinking of building a larger burner with say, a 1-1/4'' pipe instead of the 3/4'' or would there be problems?
  15. I think it could be done with a passive air cylinder better than a shock absorber....But the R&D could get oppressive and expensive. Hackney hammers worked very well. I've only seen one mechanical/air hammer operate and I was impressed.
  16. I no longer will consider used air tanks unless I can open em up and do through inspection inside the tank. I've had too many tanks that look like new on the outside fail (not with such horrific results) after I've put them to use...... You can see allot of *good looking* tanks at the junk yards....but they are usually there for a good reason....let the buyer beware................Thanks for sharing...... B)
  17. I'd be more concerened about that paint job if I were you..... ........Nice anvil...grab it!
  18. Sometimes you get a do over, a break, close call, sometimes you don't..... :( I remember needing to lift a 200lb hammer, that is the head (only)from a Chambersburg 200lb utility with my hoist and go from A to B. Simple enough with a bridge crane but all you got is basicly a rectangle shaped box with a dovetail cut into it, not real easy to grab/rig and I was in a hurry.....Ah Ha! I'll put a Bessy C clamp on the sucker and put the hook through that.....Hmmm, printed on the clamp it sez ''DON'T USE FOR LIFTING'' but shucks, it's only 175 lbs or so (w/o the die)..... B) , I'll be carefull and watch what I'm doing........... .........It was all going to plan when the upper part of the hoist struck a jib crane which was in my path and had neglected to swing out of the way.....This interference caused the hook and load to swing foward and the hammer slipped free of the clamp.....I was looking up at that moment wondering what the X caused the crash when I heard and felt a dull thump on the floor about a foot from my foot, still give me shivers to think about that.
  19. Sure It's possible but not practical, using these these materials the bike would weigh 30 lbs or more (iron tube is not available). Modern alloys are light and strong, with iron or mild steel you would have to increase mass or do lots of reinforcing to compensate .......
  20. Neat! Yes, I welded in a piece of maybe 1/8''x 1'' angle iron....It was so worn all the shims were gone. I repoured the cluch bearing too without using a lathe and I poured the bearing with the two pieces together after which I scraped the bearing to fit (you can't DO THAT  )....Is the cluch still true? I'd like to see her again sometime........... B)
  21. Looks like the hardest possible way to go about building a hammer to me. Whoever built it has good fab skills for sure, but why build the ram guide in 3 pieces when a single unit would need 6/8 bolts instead of 12. Why weld gussets around the stacked anvil discs? They do nothing. Pillow blocks for the foot treadle?.....over engineered. One heck of allot of effort went into this beast, I hope it runs well after all that..... B)
