One can see the different imprints of the various uses burnt into the wood, and also the assorted mallets I use with them. The harder the wood the better, but some use soft wood works alright too. I have been using these stumps for 20 years now, and they will be ok after I am gone. Hofi
In my shop I have 5 or 6 of these placed in different places in the smithy accessible to there use.
