BP1021 Forging long points 36-40'' long
by Uri Hofi, Shlolmo Errel
Shlolmo Errel is my student who studied with me now for 11 years.
I had a commission to forge 136 pickets for a staircase railing from round 1- 3/8'' steel to a length of 36-40'' with 1/2'' od on the pont.
Part of the finished pickets.
The steel cut to length 20'' long.
Heat the steel in the gas forge.
Fushing (fixing) the hot steel into the forging tool (handle) and locking the nut to secure the steel.
The measuring unit on the bottom air hammer die to maintain the necking point and the finale point od 1/2''.
We start to forge by necking the steel 4'' from the end forge the taper to the neck, (stage 1).
The forging process. (1) square taper, (2) brake the corners, (3) round the taper.
Measuring the neck od. Very important to calculate the right od on the neck. Because on the next forging step we must have the right transition to get an absolute right taper.
Using the holding tool (the handle).
Forging to texture the holding point.
Measure the length of the first step on the marked piece of wood hold in the vise.
Forging the second stage to the point.
Measuring the finished point (picket) on the same wood.
The same finished parts(first stage) on the trolleys.
The finished 136 pickets- long points- colored on the end according to the length
34'' 38'' 40'' long.
