BP1010 Forging a Point
by Uri Hofi

I want to show my system of forging points, which is one of the elements that we often do. This one will be a short 2'' (square point on round steel) forged in one heat.

The points.

Put the steel (5/8'' round bar) on the far edge of the anvil hanging out 3/16-1/4'' in an angle that is half of the future angle of the point. If the point is 30 degrees the steel will be in 15 degrees .

You forge with the hammer 90 degrees to the steel when the hammer is a 1/3 out (beyond the edge) of the edge of the anvil. You hammer 2-3 times on a side and rotate 90 degrees and hammer the other side again 2-3 times creating an off center neck.

You pull the steel towards you until the end of the steel comes in one line with the edge of the anvil with the neck up you tilt the hammer out to almost 45 degrees and forge straight down while rotating the steel 90 degrees every 2-3 blows. The tilted hammer forging 90 degrees to the anvil with the edge of the hammer we will move the metal fast and then creating heat.

Then you bring the hammer back to an angle that compliments the angle and planish.

The finished point 2'' long on 5/8'' round steel.

The technique is based and derived from the bp how to hold and guide the hammer''. The handle of the hammer must always be parallel to the anvil.
