April 3Apr 3 Hey all, I know how to tell if the pieces are good in person, but I was wondering if y’all thought this was a fair price. They want $1,100. The forge looks like it has been brazed. It includes the cart too. Cheers, Asa
April 3Apr 3 What is the weight on the anvil and the jaws on the vise? my gut says no but if it’s big enough I’d say maybe.
April 3Apr 3 Author They don’t specify, but I’d say the anvil looks like a Trenton, and it looks at least 100-150lbs. The vice looks, according to the bricks, 3-4 in. I have no real need for the cart, and I have seen those go for 150-300 dollars. I already have a large vice, so I might re-sell the small one, though the “blacksmith-magpie” part of me might find that hard.
April 3Apr 3 In simplest terms, if you can afford the price -- especially if you think that you can recoup part of the cost through reselling some of the items -- then go for it. If it's too rich for your blood or if you don't want to deal with the hassle of storing and selling the extra items, don't bother. It's always worth asking if the price is negotiable. If it's too high at $1,100 and they're willing to bring the price into an acceptable range, I refer you to my first paragraph.
April 3Apr 3 Seeing as the forge has been repaired, probably with brass brazing and it needs a fire grate, Most likely the cart probably needs new wheels, I would offer them $800 U.S. I can’t control the wind. All I can do is adjust my sails. ~Semper Paratus~ USCG 1964-1970
April 4Apr 4 So: Cart: $225 Vise: 150? Anvil: $500 Forge: $275 it is not a terrible price for each if you are desperate. If you already have a leg vise and anvil I would personally pass. The cart doesn’t make this more valuable. And the anvil, while in good condition, is a little pricey. repaired forges are a crapshoot.
April 4Apr 4 Author I would love to have the forge, and the anvil would be a huge upgrade, and could easily be my main anvil for most of my smithing. The vice, well, it is smaller than my other one, so there is no real need for it.
April 5Apr 5 Good Morning, Why do you have to choose 1 or the other. You will find that you will need 1 AND the other. There is NO perfect for every situation!! Except for ............. Neil

There'll be a time when you are glad you have multiple post vices.
April 5Apr 5 Location is also an issue. In Georgia, probably not. In Colorado? Lot harder to get. I would consider it if the Trenton was good and I had them money, but I would also try to knock him down a couple of hundred if he would take it. Heck, they're not getting cheaper as time passes and if you're not happy with it, you can resell it.
