moveable/ semiportable stand for leg vice

Featured Replies

Has anyone made one?  I am not a blacksmith, but I am always in need of having a vice available in different parts of the yard.  I have a post vice/ leg vice, that I want to be able to beat on occasionally.  I was thinking of mounting it on a wood shipping pallet ( approx. 4 ft x 4 foot) which would have skids underneath, so that I can drag it around the yard.  I realize that it will not be anchored firmly into the ground and that depending on what I am doing, it might want to 'spin' a bit.  But I can try to deal with that if it becomes a problem.  does anyone have any ideas on how I can mount this beast so that it can be moved from one spot to another without too much difficulty?  thanks

You'd need to work out some kind of structure/brace so you could spread the loads out on the pallet.  But with that, your idea should work great.  As long as you stand on the pallet while you're working something in the vise, you can pull as hard as you want without budging it.

i have a vise i travel with that is mounted on a piece of 6x6 that is then mounted to a piece of 2"x12" ~ 3' long. Generally just standing on the 2"x12" is enough to keep it from spinning.

Here is our traveling vise. The stand is made out of an old truck flywheel. When on dirt I drive spikes in the ground through the holes in the flywheel. If on solid surfaces I made a plate from plywood that I can screw the flywheel to it and stand on the plate to keep it from moving around.

Here’s what to do: bolt the vise to a sturdy base, attach skids or wheels with brakes to the bottom, and add retractable supports or weights/spikes for stability. This way, you can easily move it around and work without having to turn it too much.

Any chance you can upload a picture of the setup? I'm looking to mount my vise in a similar fashion, and seeing how you do it would help.

I took this right after i put it together, i changed the bottom board so it is a bit longer after using it the first time.

Outstanding! I was thinking I'd have to put some angle braces on the post connecting to the baseboard, but yours looks sturdy enough to not need it. Very nice. Thank you!
