June 30, 2025Jun 30 Pine is classified as a softwood because it's a conifer. That doesn't mean it's a soft wood. Depending on the species pine is one of the strongest and least compressible woods around. Unfortunately most folk don't know pine from tamarac and call anything with needle and cones "pine." If you want a rigid stand make a steel tripod. Frosty The Lucky.
June 30, 2025Jun 30 Yep, hard or soft wood is not about density. Yes generally hard woods are denser but balsa wood is a hard wood. Hard wood is an angiosperm and soft woods are gymnosperm.
June 30, 2025Jun 30 And neither make a difference under an anvil. My old spruce block lasted till the bottom started to rot out , 25 or so years at least. I replaced it with a steel tripod, it's always steady, very rigid and much quieter than a wood block, no matter how much chain, magnets, etc. I put on it to dam the ring. If you don't know Soderfors anvils have a dangerously loud ring if you strike the anvil, ear plugs, muffs and your ears still ring at the end of a session, LOUD. Frosty The Lucky.
July 8, 2025Jul 8 Did you miss the part of the above discussion about the difference between, "hardwood," and a "hard wood", a wood that is hard. The link explains it better than I can. https://extension.psu.edu/hardwood-or-hard-wood Frosty The Lucky.
July 8, 2025Jul 8 No i saw it, that was an attempt at sarcasm. One thing i have always hated about the internet. You can read the words but can not see body language and facial expression.
July 8, 2025Jul 8 Good one Billy you got me, well played! Being a natural joker I engage in and score word play. Sucking someone in with a sarcastic straight line scores well higher than pure sarcasm. It's not on the same level as good punishment but it is to be savored, remembered and retaliated.
