Frosty
Welcome aboard Garrett. I can't help you with the drift but that will be along presently. If you go to the top of the page and click on "User CP" and edit your profile to show your general location there's probably someone close or a reasonable distance away who can help out in person. rthibeau
if you are referring to tomahawk drifts, I make those. Where are you?
oakwoodironworks
I made a couple of axes a while back and needed something to wrap my steel around to form the eye of my axe. I was in a hurry, so I took a 3/4 and 5/8 inch rod and welded them together to form my drift and then folded my plate around it before forge welding the axe head together. Worked real well! Garrett MacAdams
thanks all rthibeau not exactly a tomahawk drift . the shape im looking for is not tear drop it is more of an oblong and flatened oval. unless this whould still be a tomahawk drift. Ferrous Beuler
Are you sure a drift is what you seek? The pics appear to show a hawk which has been made by the fold/ weld method in which case you would want a mandrel to form it around as opposed to a punch & drift approach. Just my 2 cents, o.k. I'll shut up and go away now...
rthibeau
a flattened oval is almost the same as for a tomahawk, but the 'hawk eye is tapered one way....does the axe have the hourglass eye?
Garrett MacAdams
yes the eye is tapered slightly smaller at the bottom of the eye. not sure what an hourglass eye is yes the fold and weld metod is used and id think either drift or mandrel will work as long as it gets the eye shape right as i fold and weld it rthibeau chould you make one if i gave demensions and drawings of eye shape. rthibeau
Sure, it appears it's the same as for a 'hawk except for the dimensions and size and shape...... Email or PM the info and I'll get 'er done in a couple weeks after I return from OZ.
ThomasPowers
For my little a-historic camp hatchet made from folding a farrier's rasp over and welding, I drifted it with a hammer handle drift as they are a lot easier and cheaper to find than a hatchet handle. For a historic piece you probably want to look at a number of extant pieces and make one that would be similiar to the originals!
