George N. M.
Crossroads Farrier Supply in Troy, VA (about 10 miles away) has coke in 50# bags for $28. Try other farrier supply places in your area. Also, farm and ranch stores such as Tractor Supply sometimes have coal. Contact your local blacksmithing group e.g. Central Virginia Blacksmith Guild, and find out if they sell coal or can recommend a source. "By hammer and hand all arts do stand." TSC's coal is usually anthracite and will behave differently from blacksmith's/soft/bituminous coal. If you go that route, please read our "Recommendations for Working with Anthracite" page. ThomasPowers
Yes asking folks local to you that may use coal is a better idea than asking folks in Australia, Austria, Norfolk Island, etc... We bought 500# of NICE bituminous coal at Quad-State in Ohio and hauled it back to New Mexico this year... MUCH superior to local sources out here! (Why most smiths out here use propane.)
