August 21, 200817 yr Have a customer who is wanting me to make some eel gigs. Having never made any before, I am trying to find pictures to see how the best way to make a couple. Any idea where I can find any?
August 22, 200817 yr Instead of searching the net for eel gig do a search for eel spear, there are a lot more that way. I did not realize those eels get so big.
August 22, 200817 yr Spade points 1in wide 1in apart dull. 1/4 in tapered point with single barb centered between the spades. Spade forces eel onto barbed point. Use 1/2 spades on outsides. Mine were about 12in wide. Grand parents ate them. 4ft long 41/2in thick yeah they can get big. Ken
August 22, 200817 yr Somewhere I have a book on the history of nets and coracles, it covers eel gigs and looks at the different regional styles. The type of gig depended on where you were fishing - stocky bladed gigs if in a river with a rocky bottom and long delicate heads if there was a muddy bottom. Whether there were regional differences in America I do not know.
