Tiger48
My boyfriend's father passed away a few months ago and we are trying to help his mom liquidate his assets. All we know about this anvil is that it was used by his grandfather, who has been gone for close to 20 years, but have no other information. I have read thread after thread and there are some very knowledgeable people on here that we hope can help us. We don't see a lot of distinguishing marks or logos, other than ECW that appears to be a stamp and the word BAR. I am enclosing pictures of all angles to see if someone here can help us with more information and possibly an estimate of it's value. We are located in West Virginia. It is about 12.5" long, 3.25" wide and about 6.25" tall. Not sure of weight, but it is fairly heavy. Maybe in the 50lb range. Any help/information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! Daswulf
Look up the ring and more impotantly rebound test and try it out on this anvil. That will help determine some of the value issue. It looks cast. Wether that be cast steel, cast iron or maybe but less likely cast iron with at steel faceplate, we don't know unless someone here could positively ID it. The weight is pretty light for forging much. Small stuff. A decent shop anvil is around 100- 250#. If it is just cast iron there isnt much value there to a blacksmith. Ring and rebound tests will tell more if no one has seen this specific anvil. We're I to see this somewhere for sale without testing it or just from pictures i might be willing to pay $1.00 per pound but more likely .50cents or less per pound. ThomasPowers
It looks like it has casting parting lines on the underside of the horn and heel to me. If it doesn't have an ear piercing ring when tapped with a light hammer it is most like a cast iron anvil like many that were sold for light use in a workshop not dedicated to smithing---straightening nails bending strap stock, minor repairs. As such they have little worth to a blacksmith especially as a short piece of RR rail can pinch hit for the same tasks nowadays. If it does have a piercing ring then it's cast steel and may be of interest for people doing jewelry work or small sheet metal projects. How large is the hardy hole? (The square one.) Having a holder for hardy hole tooling can be handy but the most common shaft size for those is around 1" sq.
