ValentineForge
Ive been wanting to make a hammer eye punch and drift for a while now and I got a milk crate full of random old rusty metal at an estate sale for 5$ a couple weeks ago. In it were 3 - 7/8" allen keys. I'm not big on using "mystery metal" and I was just wondering if these things would be suitable for making a punch and drift set from. Thanks in advance. pnut
Probably, but you could spark test them or do a break test but it doesn't sound like you have a lot of material to be wasting from an allen key on a break test so maybe a spark test might be the best bet. BartW
I had a box of 'm tested (these were 20 and 25 mm hex keys), and they turned out to be basic C50 steel. Al in all, I consider them mostly all simple carbon steel.
ThomasPowers
Medium carbon steel is what I would expect from a tool you don't want to break; but you don't want to twist in use either.
