Robinidas
Newby here! I've just started blade smithing as a new hobbie and I've recently purchased an anvil. I have given it a clean up and and found these inscriptions/markings (pictures attached) can anyone help me with what they mean? manufacturer or anything else? I'm interested in the history of it, thanks people. =]
ThomasPowers
Possibly an Attwood, I don't have my copy of Anvils in America in this country to see what other "Wood" there might be. The 1 0 18 is easy; it's the weight in the CWT system 1 x 112 + o x 28 + 18 so originally 130 pounds, and made in England probably at least 120+ years ago. Note: old weight markings are often a couple of pounds off nowadays. Often anvils are marked with variations on Warranted Solid Wrought Iron and often there are markings for inspectors. JHCC
If it didn't, it would be arrant nonsense! Welcome to IFI! If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!!
Frosty
Welcome aboard Robinidas, glad to have you. We're blacksmiths, we speak fluent arrant nonsense, it comes with the craft. It's no accident blacksmithing is abbreviated BS you know. Creativity is where it grows, I keep mine well fertilized. Frosty The Lucky.
