civilwarblacksmith Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 I live in a town house developement in Maryland close to the South Central border of PA. and will need to use either coke or hardwood charcoal. As to not go to the expense of going to Lowes or Home depot for the charcoal I need to find suppliers for each. I use coal at my shop at the Union Mills Homestead circa 1797. Does anyone know of any close to my area? I live in Taneytown, Md. RebThe Civil War Blacksmith[email protected] Quote
Torin Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 (edited) It isn't that close to you, but Humphrey Charcoal is in Western PA, and they make quite a lot of it. Their website is: Humphrey-Charcoal and you can order pallets of charcoal for not that much. 600 pounds for $225. Their charcoal is good for forging, and they let us pick up from the factory when I was helping out on Flaxy's iron smelting runs. Edited June 1, 2008 by Torin Quote
brucegodlesky Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Humphreys is outside of Brookville Pa, Jefferson Co. It's just a coupla miles off I80. Quote
Mike BR Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Some folks I know buy charcoal at roofing supply places. Might be worth checking if any near you stock the stuff. Quote

civilwarblacksmith Posted June 3, 2008 Author Posted June 3, 2008 Anyone ever try using wood pellets that go into pellet stoves as a fuel? I know some people are using unburnt 6" and under 2x4's to forge with in there fire pot. Using the wood as is and having turn to charcoak in the forging process. Quote

civilwarblacksmith Posted June 5, 2008 Author Posted June 5, 2008 I am already a member of the BGCM as well as on the board of directors there. I buy coal from there for the Union Mills Homestead which is my main shop, but can not use it at my home shop. We don't sell coke or charcoal at BGCM, these are what I need at home.
