February 4, 20179 yr Have made a knife out of an old semi spring and did a hand filed profile on the blade . Once I heat treated it I ended up with this scale paternity in the steel
February 4, 20179 yr It is possible to make steel from scale, as scale is a high grade ore---magnetite. Was there a question about the fine "bubble" pattern often seen on quenched items?
February 4, 20179 yr Author Yes did this happen because I did not brushes it off between the coal forge and the veggie oil or was it a temperature issue ?
February 4, 20179 yr Author Ok think I found an answer in þh blade form too much o2 while heating to temp so I will try a higher banked coal fire and easy on the air so if that helps thanks

February 5, 20179 yr Author so was it how I quenched or my oil temp when I quenched I thawed the oil then dropped two hot rr spikes into it to heat it up before I quenched but the knife barely fit so I could not move it up and down much using a àmo box for my quench tank
February 6, 20179 yr It is a rather nice patination effect to my eye. I would be happy if one of mine turned out that way-unless i was looking for a different finish of course. Would it have any detrimental effect to the strength of the blade? If not it would be a keeper to be repeated for me.
