October 17, 20169 yr I've been having a lot of fun with this material, it's great for forging all sortsa wacky integrals and then not have to spend hours getting the scales to fit. My favorite comment yet is that the material looks like someone vomited back up osso bucco and noodles on the handle... I'm still giggling
October 17, 20169 yr So whats the secret as far as not having to fit the scales? Is it some sort of product you dip the tang in and let it set on to it?
October 17, 20169 yr Author After forging and profiling the tang, I drill a couple holes and create a chamber to contain the material with artists tape, then literally mix n pour the material around the tang. It's easy to shape and cleans up nice.
October 18, 20169 yr I really like the idea. Forging through heat treat is much more fun for me than fit and finish on the handles, and this looks like it could save a fair amount of time. I'd like to try some darker colors with some copper or brass swarf in the mix.
October 18, 20169 yr I was wondering about how differing colours of egg shell would look. I get dark brown and blue/green eggs from farmer friends on a regular basis...
October 18, 20169 yr Author Buzzkill, sounds like it's time for you to experiment Thomas, the issue I am facing with using other types of shells is that dozens are needed per each knife, and each needs to be sanitized and cleaned before use; I get white ones already sanatized and cleaned for me by the pound... although I suppose nothing is stopping me from just dying them.
October 19, 20169 yr I'm liking the impregg more all the time Theo. If the noodle barf comment tickles you how about putting some red and green died shell in it and something mushroom shape for that pizza puke look? Hey, speaking of noodles I bet you can arrange noodles in cool shapes, let it dry and impregg it for that can of worms look. Frosty The Lucky.
