The idea is to have a smoothish surface that won't catch the sparks like your laces and boot tongue will. Many of the foundries I go to the spats they use are the silver heat resistant ones but are much more expensive and are not really needed in the blacksmith shop.

April 20, 201610 yr In the cheapies, Wolverines aren't bad. Takes me about 6 to 8 months to go through a pair, usually the sole seperates from the upper. That's everyday wear, work on the railroad, farmwork, and forging. Catch them for about 70-80 bucks on sale.

Super Boot. I know a place in Cody WY but a bit far to get measured.
April 20, 201610 yr Dale, I love those!!! Australian Redback boots are without a doubt, hands down the most comfortable, long lasting "workingmans' boots" ever. Even if you happen to be a woman.. and trust me, I've been through a lot of boots, you know what they say about girls and their shoes, well I'm quite partial to boots. Totally worth the £80 odd to ship them from down under!!!
May 20, 201610 yr No posts since last month, but I'll add my two cents anyway. I swear by Blundstones. I used to buy cheap at Wallyworld, but I would get knee pain that would then turn into an aching lower back. These boots aren't cheap, but they're made tough, and the pair I currently have pass Canadian Safety Association, are also electrical shock resistant (Omega) and have metatarsal protection. Oh yeah. And my knees and feet and back don't hurt anymore.
May 20, 201610 yr I agree with the comments about White's boots. Found out about them as a Wildland Fire Fighter. Hot, grueling work all day long. Expensive but worth every penny.
