matto
It is a wagon vise. The holes. In the base are for u bolts that go around the tong of the wagon. Nice little vise.
Alan Evans
Looks the kind of tool that will do a lot of things badly. As opposed to a tool which does only one thing, but does it well. Alan after matto's comment... it is the sort of all-rounder like a leatherman multi tool which is handy when working on site.
Jim Coke
Greetings DH, Not a wagon tongue vise.. This is a common bench vise offered by many suppliers in about 1900. You are missing a pin that limits the opening.. They open very wide and are a handy addition to your shop. They are cast so limited use of the anvil end.. Put a pin the hole and give it a try,, Forge on and make beautiful things Jim
njanvilman
It looks like there is a braze repair on the movable jaw. Might or might not affect its operation. It does show that it was over-tightened at some point or had a bad casting.

Jim Coke
Greetings Alan, Correct.. The initial opening width is established by the pin adjustment Than final closure by the screw thread .. Should open to almost a foot.. Handy tool when you need it.. I keep one mounted in a tri-stand and use it a lot .
