ThomasPowers
If I'm going for a cave welding fire (AKA a closed fire) I leave it solid and poke a hole to access the "cave". If I am going for an open fire I generally break it into smaller chunks so I can nestle steel in amongst it. With the really nice coal I have to pull up chunks so the fire can breathe if I am starting from all green coal and when I do so; yes I do get more black smoke.
