possum
taps and dies, really rusty.old milling machine. bed was all sloppy and had a machinist friend come buy. he said it was too worn out.4'3" x 3 1/2" round HEAVY metal bar.I was thinking of taking the bed off the mill and using as part of my welding table. The round bar I was thinking of maybe making either cutting or punch plates since my anvil is just a 6" cube of steel welded onto a 6" x 1" x 2' tube and not hardened. Also though of making dies for power hammer or press later on. It's a lot of metal but was wondering about other ideas before my wife has me scrap it.possum
Crantius
Taps/dies: remove rust, keep, especially the large ones. Make guillotine tool inserts from dies if you really don't need them.
Frosty
Mount the 3.5" rd. on end at the right height and it will make a FINE anvil. Use the trimmings as stock.Tthe mill table might make a good jig table similar to an Acorn platten, not the same but workable.Frosty The Lucky. possum
Will the taps and dies still be usable after cleaning the rust off?possum
notownkid
It will depend on the level of rust on each one as to the level of usability after they are derusted/cleaned. From what I can see in the picture they are in better shape than some of mine have been and they have worked OK. Certainly a crap shoot. BIGGUNDOCTOR
Who made the mill? There are old tool collectors who may need parts, or who would spend the time restoring it.
plain ol Bill
Taps and dies - squirt cutting oil on them and use them. They will clean themselves.
TwistedCustoms
Even if the taps and dies are too far gone to cut, which is doubtful, they can still be used to clean out rusted threads on machines or other things you may scrounge. They just need a shot of oil. The mill bed would make an awsome gig table with moveable pins for bending scrolls, holding work so you can really push on a hand held drill motor, all sorts of things.
