The plates are on the sides as it appears the entire front half was broken off at one time. You can follow the weld repairs down the front.

 

Anthony. If you build a base, make sure the beams are built up with them standing vertically ( IIII ) not  horizontally ( ---- ).   Some end cuts off a glue-lam , or railroad tie could save some time if you can't find a stump, but I have even seen them done out of 2x4's.

Thank you, sir. That is exactly what I am going to do. Upright beams using 2x8's.

the welding is very bad arc welding on my anvil

I see. The welding on the actual crack looks a lot like gas welding. I presumed the rest was too, except the blobs that some plonker has left using the anvil as a welding table.
