ThomasPowers
Do the ball bearing test on the face; the body is definitely cast. 7 is indicative of the weight.
marc4fishing
Hammer test was good..no ball bearings available before I left work to get it
marc4fishing
Just got back to my car..hammer seems to bounce ok..but no ring at all..did I get screwed?
Judson Yaggy
Define "Bounce ok" please. Written descriptions of physical activities need to have some baseline everyone reading can understand. Measurements or video are good.Ring is over rated and variable. Don't worry about the ring unless you already know what to listen for with a given make of anvil. Different makes of anvils have different sounds, same makes of anvils have different sounds depending what they are sitting on.
jacob's hammer
I have Badger anvil it does not ring either. I love it. I have HB too but it rings like church bell...probably better anvil tho not used as often.
marc4fishing
Not sure but here is a video from last night..try number..3 anvil2.mp4 anvil2.mp4
Daniel S
I hate to say it but the video doesn't make it look promising. I would find a ball bearing and drop it from 10 inches to give it a real test. Since you have it you can still use it, it just may not be what you were looking for. What is your location? marc4fishing
That sucks...I live in NY...home of taxes and no rights..the Hudson valley...I heard there is a blacksmithing place up in Greene county...where i work I have. Access to a lot of stock maybe I'll cut some 6 inch round and see if that can be hardened
Daniel S
If you're not already a member, here is an ABANA affiliate not too far away. http://www.northeastblacksmiths.org/#list . I know someone who hadn't found an anvil in over a year, but found one in a few hours posting a want ad on the state associations facebook page.
