November 17, 201411 yr Looking for some information on some small ax making classes coming up?? Preferably the wrapped and forge welded with a bit, or possibly split and drifted would do too. Have quite a bit experience at general blacksmithing but never tackled axes.. Have made a few Tomahawk styles with the railroad spike.Retired now so have some time to take a few classes. Thanks
November 17, 201411 yr Now far are you willing to travel and how much do you want to invest in the class?
November 17, 201411 yr Like Glenn said how far are you willing to travel. James Austin should be having some Viking style axe classes in the spring in Oakland California. There are periodic ones all over. For closer to home you might look for your local blacksmith association. They probly have a list of classes, schools, instructors, or something similar.
November 17, 201411 yr Author Taking 4 or 5 of the advanced classes at John C Campbell(Gerry Darnell,Tal Harris)over the years. Active in two blacksmith chapters in the Midwest.. I also teaching blacksmith classes myself. I would travel a long day's drive. Have the experience to build one, but would enjoy taking a class too.Just didn't see anything class list of my searches on the web involving axes . Thinking maybe someone knew of one coming up???
November 17, 201411 yr You just missed the annual class at Montgomery CC in central NC, end of October. Robert Silver in NC also teaches classes, look for him on facebook. Does not seem to be anything on the calendar for JCC, NESM, ABS or any other schools that I can think of at the moment.
November 17, 201411 yr Cool. The only one I knew of coming up is the one I mentioned and that don't have dates yet and is a bit more then a days drive. Heehee.
November 17, 201411 yr Amended to say that the only NESM ax class is in January, and is full with a waiting list. It may be 2016 before they have another. There is usually somebody doing this as a demo at any of the larger bladesmith hammer-ins. Participation may be harder to achieve.
November 17, 201411 yr Author Some good videos on YouTube that I looked for ax making, any videos or books?? Someone might recommend??
November 17, 201411 yr Have you been to Ryan Johnson's Tomahawk and Ax forging class at John C. Campbell? The whole weekend focuses on folded and wrapped eye style axes and hawks. It's an awesome class! Usually in August.
