October 18, 201411 yr Hi. I recently picked up this anvil and was wondering if anyone could ID it for me. I've posted a few photos and took some measurements. Total length: 28.5 Face: 18x4.5 Height: 11.5 Footprint: 11x9.5 The only readable writing on it is "202" on the side. Above this is a possible letter that might be an "H" without its crossbar. Presumably the 202 is the weight in hundredweight which would put it about 226 lbs which feels about right (I have not weighed it). Thanks for the help.
October 18, 201411 yr What's the bottom look like? the shape of a possible indentation there might nail down the brand
October 19, 201411 yr Lack of a serial # on the foot under the horn would probably rule out Hay-Budden. And their weight is in pounds.
October 19, 201411 yr Author I did not check the bottom. I'll try to do that tomorrow some time. I looked hard for a serial number on the foot but didn't see one. I assumed the "202" was hundredweight but it could be pounds.
October 19, 201411 yr getting a good weight would help narrow it down between English and American makers---the roughness under the heel makes me think of A&H---can you see the hammer blows from the steam hammer under the heel or is that just minor roughness?
October 19, 201411 yr Also, Arm & Hammers tended to have a figure 8 dimple under the base, as opposed to the Trenton capsule shape.
October 19, 201411 yr Author OK. Unchained my anvil and weighed it on a bathroom scale. About 202 pounds so the weight on the anvil is in American. I flipped the anvil over and took a picture of the bottom perhaps it will help. I believe the two boogered up areas on the edge of the two sides shown in the pic are not original to the anvil. It looks to me like it was welded down at one time and then cut free....... Thanks for looking!
October 20, 201411 yr My Trenton is stamped 206, weighs 206lbs ad has a pretty flat bottom. Of course that could just be a coincidence. Frosty The Lucky.
October 20, 201411 yr Anybody with a copy of AinA check the number and placement of the handling holes? Seems odd that there is one on one of the feet and not the other.
