April 14, 201412 yr (im writing in english because im not really sure on the rules here about foreign languages and posting in them) So, I've been a member on this site here for about two years or so, and I have only seen 2-3 smiths here from Iceland, now I know that we are not few, the Icelandic smiths, about 300 in the facebook group, and I'd like to get a rough idea on how many there are here, so if you're from Iceland, do leave a comment, lets see how many we are here, maybe we could get our own thread in the Blacksmith group forum (im skrifa á ensku vegna þess að ég í raun ekki viss um reglur hér um erlendum tungumálum og staða í þeim) Svo, ég hef verið meðlimur á þessari síðu hér í um tvö ár eða svo, og ég hef bara séð 2-3 Smiths hér frá Íslandi, nú veit ég að við erum ekki fáir, íslenskir smiðir, um 300 í facebook hóp, og mig langar til að fá grófa hugmynd um hversu margir eru hér, þannig að ef þú ert frá Íslandi, ekki eftir umsögn, við skulum sjá hversu margar við erum hér, kannski að við gætum fengið eigin þráð okkar í Járnsmiður hópur umræður
April 14, 201412 yr Feel free to post in any language you wish. But it is very considerate of you to take the time to make sure the majority of the members can read your posts here. :) Feel frjáls til að skrifa á hvaða tungumáli sem þú vilt. En það er mjög tillit af þér að taka tíma til að tryggja að meirihluti félagsmanna geta lesið yout innlegg hér. :) I love babelfish
April 14, 201412 yr Please post in BOTH languages. That way you prove the IForgeIron is indeed an international site. (grin) Maybe someone will find Icelandic being spoken and feel at home with this thread, and then the site. Vinsamlegast staða á báðum tungumálum. Þannig að þú sanna IForgeIron er örugglega alþjóðlegur staður. (grin) Kannski einhver finnur Icelandic talað og líða eins og heima með þessum þræði, og þá staður.
April 15, 201412 yr Author well, if you do visit, there is a decent smithy in Akranes, there's a tournament there 29th of May to 1st of June if you're visiting then, I'll try to be there
April 17, 201412 yr I actually just got accepted into the University of Iceland, so I'll living in Reykjavik come September! So this thread is very heartening to me, because I would definitely like to continue smithing and welding while I'm over there. I was wondering what kind of forges do people generally use over there, and how easy is it to find materials?
April 17, 201412 yr Ice forge. plenty of Ice for fuel... ;) < returns to the corner wearing the pointy hat>
April 17, 201412 yr Author I actually just got accepted into the University of Iceland, so I'll living in Reykjavik come September! So this thread is very heartening to me, because I would definitely like to continue smithing and welding while I'm over there. I was wondering what kind of forges do people generally use over there, and how easy is it to find materials? coal and charcoal mostly, I only know of two people here that have made gas forges, if you're interested in a viking age-ish forge you can come to akranes if there's anything happening in the museum, good chance that the smithy will be open then, the icelandic blacksmithing association also usually shows up on menningarnótt (culture night) which is held the first saturday after 18th of august, not in september but if you're coming here early you could catch it about the material, if you know the right people then it's no problem, i suggest you try to find fabrication shops, maybe you can get something there, atleast some advice on where to look for stuff
April 17, 201412 yr So perhaps a related question: what kinds of blacksmithing things should she bring because they are difficult to find there?
April 19, 201412 yr Author well, blacksmithing isn't really a popular sport/industry/whatever it's classified as here in iceland, but if you know someone in iceland who can let you use their forge, then only things you might want to bring are your own tools, take a look at my travel tool kit for a guideline if you want,('?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>>) but if you're going to set up a small place to forge here yourself, then a stake anvil and maybe a forge too if you can for fuel, here you just don't walk into the hardware shop and pick up a bag of coke, there's one place, Elkem, that has a lot of green coal i think, maybe you can talk to someone there and get permission to get a bucket of it
April 24, 201412 yr What's the price of propane there? I'm not sure exactly what the area is going to be like, or how much space I'm going to have yet. So if I do make my own portable forge propane might be more compact, but I'm not sure. What's the facebook group you were mentioning?
April 24, 201412 yr Author i don't really know about the price of propane, but i think you have to rent tanks or something and that costs quite a bit if i remember correctly, and the group is called Íslenskir Eldsmiðir we pretty much only speak icelandic there but sometimes we post in both languages
