DesertDisciple
I found this in my moms garage. It was badly rusted so I soaked in vinegar for about a week. I had the intention of resetting the bevel and using it as a hatchet, but I notice the eye is shaped for a hammer handle and the hammer face is flat like a forging hammer. I wonder if it could be better used as a hot cutting tool? here's more pics. Let me know what you think. Not sure what type of steel it is. jeremy k
Looks to me like a splitting maul that the handle went missing.
DesertDisciple
LOL! Can't believe I didn't think of that. You know I hadn't occurred to me that mauls had round eyeholes. Hatchet it is then.
Charles R. Stevens
I use an old east wing splitting maul as a hot cut. Not exactly the most eve kent shape (an axe would be better) but I works well I have considered re hardening it as a cold set, but like a lot of ideas it sees more mental cobwebs than light of day. VaughnT
The curved edge and obtuse edge grind makes me think it's definitely a splitting maul.... and not a really good one, at that! I'd regrind the profile and use it as a hot cut; the curve of the edge can be a benefit in that application. As a hatchet, it will be heavy and unbalanced, neither are a good thing in a hatchet. Jim Coke
Greetings Desert, Best use caution.. It looks cast to me.. Just a small hand size splitting maul .. Not a very good one... Forge on with care Jim
