Two new wrights and a base?

Featured Replies

Just showing off two anvils that I have just acquired, The small one is a Henry Wright at 116lb and in excellent conditions. The larger one is a Peter Wright at 370lb. I got given the cast steel base with the anvil which is also a lot heavier. Is this base used for an anvil or is it far a swage block, the internal size is 15" x 16" and would weigh over 450lb. In the back ground of the Henry Wright is my 467lb Wilkinson

That's some very good looking kit you've acquired!  Generally speaking, a stand for a swage block would have a slot or depression in the middle so you could safely stand a swage block on edge without fear of it falling over.  If your cast stand doesn't have a provision for that, it's more than likely just meant for an anvil.

I've seen lots of cast iron bases but never a cast steel one, are you sure about the material?

Cast steel was only an assumption, it is probably iron.

Cast iron, for sure.  It was/is far cheaper than anything else.  If there's a slot for the swage block to stand upright, you've got something dandy.  If there isn't, you've got a fantastic anvil stand!

Thanks, there is no slot,I will pack timbers around the anvil base to stop the movement

Could you list the dimensions of the 370# Peter Wright?

Length from heel to horn.
Length and width of top plate.
Length and width of base.
Height of anvil.
Size of hardie and pritchel hole.

Thanks.

Thanks Daniel, please see sizes of the Peter Wright

Heel to horn is 300mm
Top plate is 570 x 135mm
Base is 345 x 320mm
Height is 375mm
Hardie is 38 mm
Pritchel is 22 mm

Thanks Tony. 300mm seems low for the length from heel to horn. Maybe a typo?

Heel to horn is 870, the 300 was the horn
