Glenn
At the flea market today RR track anvil maybe 20 pounds. Marked $35 but will take $25. There were a couple of 8 to 10 pound sledge hammers that could have been put into service as a small anvil. Marked $10.
Ridgewayforge
Glenn, its hard to keep the mindset that any steel or iron block can be used when there is such a stigma on RR track anvils like this one. A great many posts are made on here deprecating anvils such as this. I have found these quite useful. I have a 30 pound piece of track, and with a disadvantage like the lack of mass only requires an increase in determination, elbow grease and a stubborn will. Any good smith will hammer hot iron when he can, with the tools he has, be it campfire, railroad track anvil, propane forge etc.
ThomasPowers
Weyger's book "The complete Modern Blacksmith" has a whole chapter on making such a RR track anvil including the horn, hardy and Heat Treating it!
marcusb
I have found them to be a great additional to any shop. Great for small task or others that may injury a larger exspensive anvil. I remeber Weyger saying somthing to the effect of fastening them down well and using them as he would a much larger anvil without issues. Daniel S
I started out using a similar piece of rr track. I still use it for a bench anvil. I've straightened and tensioned a few saws on it. The small size makes it convenient to move to and from the bench.
Everything Mac
I made my first ever set of tongs on an anvil just like that. It's currently being used by an amateur armourer. Set on a heavy log I find RR track anvils to be perfectly capable. Andy
