eseemann
Anyone ever forge Bushhog blades? I just got 4 old used blades that I plan to normalize today and then cut in to bars to forge in to knives and such. I have read that the Bushhog brand is 5160 on Tractor Supply web site and on another site that "Mower Knives" are 10XX (1070-1085) steel. Any thoughts? ThomasPowers
5160 is a decent knife steel---the problem is how can you be sure those are 5160? You can always try a test blade and see how it heat treats and works. Just remember to always tell folks that they are brush hog blade and not tell them it's 5160 if you don't know that for a fact! Moderator51
Esseeman, Please take the extra time to place your posts in a proper area. This is a post about materials for knifemaking. We should not have to take time to put your entries in a place they belong in.
Frosty
the main issue I have with brush hog blades is the level of abuse they go through before being replaced. Their life is nothing but impact, brush sure but trees, rocks, scrap iron in the weeds, etc. etc. I'd have to pass. Frosty The Lucky.
