WayneCoeArtistBlacksmith
macbruce, when I first started taking classes at John C. Campbell Folk School they had those cone type hoods. A couple of years later they changed to side draft forges and it was amazing how much cleaner we were at the end of the day. A very good side draft (not the kind at JCCF) is Lester Beckman's "Super Sucker". Do a Google search for Super Sucker and you should come up with plans for how to build one. Very simple and easy to build. Edit: Well I tried that and it didn't work well so then I did, "Lester Beckman's Super Sucker" and came up with a lot of hits, including http://southgablacksmiths.ning.com/photo/drawing-for-supersucker-hood
