Pipes for a Drum Brake Forge

Featured Replies

Where can I find the pipes I need for a drum brake forge? I need to find iron but all I can seem to find is galvanized.

Where are you located?
Regular black pipe at most any h-ware store will work.
Good luck.

Ditto what Pete said. You can get the pipe, cut and weld together or take the expensive route and get threaded pieces and fittings. Local hardware will have what you need or should be able to order it for you.

I feel your pain, large iron pipes are hard to find if you don't have a old style hardware store. If you can weld you can use exhaust pipe. You can also use thin wall fencepost, but have to pickle to remove the zinc first prior to welding.

If you are stuck with galvanized, soak overnight in vinegar or for a few minutes in muriatic acid. For a brake drum forge you need at least 1 1/2 inch pipe (not very good) larger is better, 3 inch is best.

Go to a plumbing supply, they have all you will ever need and then some.

You can get black iron pipe (no galvanizing) in 3/4 inch or one inch and lay it horizontal across the drum. Add air to get a instant side blown forge. Add mud or a piece of metal to cover any holes in the bottom of the forge.

Nice tight little set up. I like it. You may want to put a piece of plate between the forge and the stump however. That will get hot. But thats plenty good to get some nice things made.
