July 30, 201213 yr Because sometimes you feel like a nut! I barter with my tree guy so here is a fun one. Forged iron and bronze, 30"h 37"w, 5/8"x1-1/2" top and 1-3/4" legs textured under the hammer and a tiny bronze bird. It will get a wood top and rust patina.
July 30, 201213 yr Wow, Danger, that is soooo awesome!!! At the school where i work one of the projects we do is making simple mechanical toys, (out of wood, with cams etc -fish with googly eyes, cars with little men bopping up and down, you get the picture!) I never really thought about using those mechanisms in a table!!! Truly brilliant!!!
July 30, 201213 yr I'll tell ya whut........those birds are something else ! Also ...a nice touch on the nubs ( cut off branches ). Sweet project.
July 31, 201213 yr danger thats totally ace!! i love it! the wooden legs look brilliant - and as for the little moving bird - the mans a genius! :) beautifully made, and i like how youve kept the amount of 'wood' mellow and quite sparse - youve not gone barmy having it tangling all everywhere. its lovely :)
July 31, 201213 yr The Phrase "good enough" was apparently cut out of your vocabulary a long time back. That table base is over the top. Thanks for sharing it with us.
July 31, 201213 yr Author Thanks all, I feel like I might sprout some wings and fly off with all the bird related work I've done of late... This table shows you can have some restraint and still make something special in a small amount of time, it was really fun to do to boot!
July 31, 201213 yr Really really dig it, nice little mechanism. It's a simple thing to make something difficult, but can be difficult to make something simple.
July 31, 201213 yr Very nice and clever. I'm minded a little bit of Diego Giacometti's work, which one can google and find images. However, his birds were immobile.
August 1, 201213 yr Fantastic work Michael!!!!! I like the mechanism . Tell me is the object for the owner to "peck" the person on the oposite side of the table by squeezing the spring loaded arm????? and watching him/ her "freak out" as they look down and see the bird coming to life and pecking them again? well done! andrew
August 1, 201213 yr Author Frank, thanks for the info on Diego, hadn't seen his work before. Just add your own sound effects Andrew
August 2, 201213 yr For a little inspiration, do some research on the Giacometti brothers. They were amazing and the cast bronze furniture is timeless. I have several books of their works and often refer to them. Several years ago, I was asked to make some bronze firescreens for Joe Felbers clients as he was too busy to do so. (Joe is a really good blacksmith and is always busy). When I walked into the clients home (wine country CA.), there were 2 original Giacometti tables, and 3 Calder mobiles. Me, in heaven and blown away visually. What a treat! That's not to mention the paintings and beautiful French ironwork on some antique doors. I like those 1/2 of one percent folks. :) Speaking of which, I think it is imperative to have a good library of metalwork books to feed on. (Forget the Kindle. My little jab as my wife is a bookseller). John
August 3, 201213 yr Author Dropped off the table today, it was a big hit. Here are a few pics of our first trade, major branches were 3 1/2" minor branches 2" and 1"
August 3, 201213 yr From now on, I will have to watch out for a pecking bird from a table leg. You have an ingenious mind!
