July 23, 201213 yr Nice catch. I'm looking for a portable forge. My forge is stationary and I have been approached to do 3 demos this fall. I can make one but would rather pick up a "real" one. You've done good! Mark <><
July 23, 201213 yr Very nice. I want one like it! I actually found one hidden in a junk barn but the guy wants 500 bucks for it, and it looks like everything is seized up. :(
July 23, 201213 yr Well pretty much every hardware company/store/dealer and their dog made similar forges so could be most anyone if not marked. Not to mention re-branding (Sears & Roebuck sold anvils under their "brand name" made by a slew of different makers, HB and Trenton to name a couple IIRC)
July 23, 201213 yr Author i got to fixing some of the no bolts and no oil for god knows how long and it spins and blowes like a charm now ! should i keep the rubber belt on it or go back with the leather tipe ? o and i found a 100 stamped on the bottom of the pan ? that all i can find...
July 31, 201213 yr That's a beauty, for sure. I'd keep the rubber belt until it wears out, but be sure to have a spare belt on hand so you don't lose any time hunting another one. And paint those ugly legs.
July 31, 201213 yr Author i have been to bussy useing it to paint it yet, any one know where to get a new ash grate ? it has 2 cracks in it and its not going to last long....
July 31, 201213 yr There's a guy on ebay that sells replacement grates. Seems like a decent price, too, but I'm not sure what "grey iron" is. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Blacksmith-Tuyere-Plate-/251120068678?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a77ec2846#ht_500wt_1021
July 31, 201213 yr grey iron is the cheapest form of cast iron---when you break it the surface is gray. Perfectly proper for a grate.
August 1, 201213 yr Thomas, how long would you expect a grey iron grate to last in the forge? This particular one doesn't look too thick..... Would you be better off drilling a bunch of holes in some mild steel?
