May 16, 201214 yr Hello, I recently picked up a nice HB and it needed a stand. I had no logs large enough handy so I made it from scrap I had available. I used 3/4 CDX for the base to provide a nice flat surface. Then on the corners and centers I used oak 4x4's. I boxed it in, filled with sand then capped the top with 1.5" oak board. I added cleats between the feet. I tried to think of a simple hold down and chain filled that nicely. I wrapped it around base then lagged the screws in at an angle so it tightens as you screw in the lags. Very simple and effective. Anvil has no movment and chains are tight. I built this stand in about 1 hour, and it has greater mass than a wood stump. Dont let the lack of a "Perfect" stump stop you from putting that new anvil into service!
May 16, 201214 yr Looks great! I was thinking about building a sandbox stump for my anvil, but opted to use up some 6x6 timber cut offs I had laying around. Did you caulk under the anvil to kill the ring?
May 17, 201214 yr Sand boxes work well and are easily adjustable for height should it be desirable. They also tend to damp the ring, like dead stop any resonance. Frosty The Lucky.
May 21, 201214 yr Author I did not calk, still had a ring, placed a magnent under the heel, that helped alot
May 21, 201214 yr I did the same thing.... even shot a video about it. A magnet under the heel, and one on the horn, killed all of the ring. A bit of caulk under the anvil killed 99% of the ring, and a magnet on the horn killed the rest. Either way, it's nice to have a quiet anvil!
