Justin Marquez Posted April 17, 2012 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Im a soon to-be Blacksmith, i dont want to stick just to weapons even though knives are my passion. I have felt since i first saw Crocodile Dundee when i was about 8, that i was going to make knives for a living, i have come to notice all the other stuff around the average home and self owned business that is made of metal and recently decided that all sorts of Blacksmithing seem to be within my grasp and anything i can accomplish successfully will be part of my Blacksmithing career on a custom basis. any questions are welcome i would really like to get to know alot of you! Take in all the knowledge and advice you can. This site is a great place to start. You will get plenty of advice/opinions/critique here so long as you think about your question prior to posting. matto Posted April 17, 2012 Share Posted April 17, 2012 good to have another nebraska boy here. as RLD said join pba there are alot of good smiths between linclon and omaha. there is a pba meeting in filly this weekend. you can get info off of the pba website. i hear ya about all the metal in a house. i raised the bar on that all my door casing, base board (base metal), window casing and other trim work ar all out of metal. i have made all my tables and a lot of other furniture in the house out of metal. I am not discouraged by this, I have made many friends in the industry, so im not too worried. its just getting started that is being rougher than i could have ever anticipated. ThomasPowers Posted November 6, 2012 Share Posted November 6, 2012 Having taught people legally blind and a fellow who was a thalidomide victim and seen a one armed knifemaker I can say that many folks with disabilities will really have to work hard at *NOT* being able to learn to smith. I have experimented with smithing sitting down as it may come to that some day to me and I wanted to be sure I could forge in a wheelchair if necessary! However many smiths are worried about the liability of teaching them or don't want to invest the extra time needed. (remember that to people making a living off of their craft time is money; so be gentle with them!) Persevere! I don't know of any group that mandates work to be a member of it as so many of us go through life issues over time; talk with them to see what they really mean. Show for an open forge night, and see what the facilities are and if they and you can make reasonable accomodations. I doubt it will be a wasted evening.
